clutch problems

so i got an old yerf dog with a tecumseh. that engine didnt start after i tried everything. so i bought a new used tecumseh 5 hp and threw a brand new clutch on because the last clutch took off slow. so after i installed everything i give it some gas and my engine takes off but my kart dont move. the clutch got very hot and started to smoke after a minute or two of trying to drive it. whats going on?

another question.
i have an 8hp briggs motor but the shaft isnt keyed. is there anyway i can put a clutch on that?

please help before i sell this ****

also how can i get the clutch off my old engine? does it unscrew or do i use a puller?

Ok, first things first: what is your gearing; how many teeth on the clutch & axle? If your gearing is off, this may have been the problem with your old clutch.

As far as your old engine goes: does it have compression & spark? Answer that & we'll go form there

Re: 8hp briggs; you can have a keyway slot machined into the shaft. Not sure if you can mount a clutch without one (but I think it's been done), that's one for toystory.

I would not mount a clutch without a keyway. Setscrews are intended to keep the clutch from sliding off, and NOT transferring torque.

If the kart accelerates slowly and the clutch smokes, it is horribly overloaded. Your gear ratio is too high. Your Yerf may have come with a CVT originally, and somebody scabbed on a C-clutch without regearing. This is wrong, and happens very frequently. Publish your clutch and axle tooth counts, as well as the overall diameter of your rear tire.

As for removing your old clutch- if there's a bolt in the end of the shaft, remove it. Inspect the clutch closely for one or two setscrews, and remove them. Hose the shaft in WD40, fluidfilm, or similar and let sit for a day. Use a puller. Don't kill it, it will probably be very stubborn.

You are more than likely geared incorrectly. Post tooth counts and tyre diameter that have been asked for

Okay. so my rear tires are size 20 x 10.00 as it reads on the the tire. my axle sprocket has 60 teeth and my clutch has 10 teeth. Thx for the help!

Sorry, I didn't notice your answer until now. You have an acceptable gear ratio of 6:1, but the problem is that you have thrown it all out of whack by having 20" tyres. A 6:1 gear ratio with 20" tyres is a big NO NO.

What you are going to have to do is get a larger rear sprocket. I would say at least a 72T sprocket. This will give you more torque, and will put a lot less stress on your clutch.

If you don't gear lower, you are always going to have problems
