I just bought a yerf dog and a new 212cc Predator for it. Can't get the max torque clutch on it to save my life. the clutch key seems too long and the crankshaft is much longer that the clutch. I am completely new to this, so maybe I am just making amatuer mistakes. Thanks for any help!

i have used washers, that would slide over the crankshaft, to use as spacers, to help position the clutch, further out, or closer in, but make sure that the will just barely slide over the shaft, and not the shoulder, then, make sure that the washer at the end of the stack holds them all on. once you get it positioned, then take care of the long key, cut you a shorter one, and use the set screws to further reinforce it, whenever you get everything lined up, and you should be good.

So i know the keyway does not go all the way through, I looked at it. The key itself is not integrated. I dropped it enough times to know that for sure. lol. I wish I could post pics, but my phone is not working correctly right now. How short do I cut the key? And how do you cut them little things?

Use a grinder, or a hacksaw. Make the key long enough to fill the keyway in the clutch, If the clutch has a setscrew that will hold the key in place. If there is nothing to hold the key in, make it as long as the keyway in the PTO shaft.

Well, unfortunately I bought this secondhand. The clutch seems to be in good condition, as much headache as it's giving me, but I noticed both set screws are missing. :( The key is about 1 5/8" long. Fits perfectly in the PTO shaft. But this means that the clutch itself can only slide halfway on, because the keyway only extends halfway through the clutch.

I could probably get it all the way on without the key, there is nothing stopping it, just a really tight fit. The keyway on the PTO starts flat, and curves up to flush on the inside. So for the key to sit flat, it has to be flush with the outside edge of the PTO shaft. And because the keyway only goes halfway through the clutch, the key can't be sticking that far down the PTO shaft. Am I making any sense? I'm trying to use the right terms here.

Then cut the key as short as is necessary to get it to fit right. Also- if there's any rust on the shaft, hit it with some sandpaper.

I find a scotch brite pad works a bit easier with shaft fouling, for putting on a clutch, bearing ect. than the paper. Keeps the grit out of the works and it usually is all it needed.

I kinda figured thats what it was gonna boil down to, but wanted to consult more experienced minds first. Is the fact that I am missing the two set screws going to present a problem? Obviously its not good, but can I run without them?

You can as long as you have a bolt on the end, but it is better practice to have them. I picked up the set screw assortment box at Harbor Freight for a few bucks. It has all the set screws I have needed so far.
