For those of you that read my intro, you know i have been around the block with Corvettes and Tunnell Hull Race boats. So this is my project: I have purchased a shifter style Kart with no engine. I am installing a twin cylinder 2 stroke 440 snowmobile engine on it. I am not mounting it beside me, I have extended the frame about 1 foot with proper size tubing and mig welded it together. This is a" how fast can I go" build, not racing anyone but the cops. I have also got a mounting plate ready to install as soon as I figure out exact engine mounting location. I have a 40 mm steel axle, but it is still hollow, just not aluminum. I am not using a CVT or a torque converter set up, or a jack shaft. If i have to push start this thing or use my starter to do a rolling start that is what I will do. So, this engine has a CVT clutch to operate the snowmobile, The clutch rides on a removable shaft that has a taper machine end that fits over the machine tapered end of the crank and uses a approximately 7-inch 1/2-inch bolt that ends up pulling the shaft and the crank together for a perfect no slip fit without any keyway. I bought the puller and was able to remove the clutch shaft from the crank. The shaft is over 1 inch in diameter from the crank end all the way down to about 1 1/2 inch from the end where it drops down to a one-inch splined area that the outer CVT hub would spline to. Now I have been looking for the centrifugal clutch that no one has or is willing to build for this engine because they all admit that they can't build a clutch to take the horsepower. What a bunch of pussies! They have quit before they even try. Well I know that it can be done because we have motorcycles with more than 40 hp. I have heard of people putting every kind of engine on a go kart except a B.B. chevy. My question is what are they using for a clutch? I need Ideas, from people who have done it themselves, not from people who have heard about it. One thing I do know that i am doing is putting twin rear dick and calipers on this death trap. I am looking forward to reading about what you guys have engineered that works. I also know that a size 50 chain at the least buy have not seen any 50 sprockets anywhere for Karts. UP DATE: I have found a clutch company that makes a centrifugal clutch that is rated for 18- 40 HP. NORMAN CLUTCH, but it has a double groove pully for two V belts. That will not work so I have to contact them on Monday to see if they can put a chain sprocket on it. I am going with #50 chain. Any recommendations for #s of teeth on the drive sprocket and need to know where to find # 50 sprocket that will go on a 40 mm axle hub. anyone know where I can get the rear sprocket and what # of teeth I should get?
