I did a google search with not much luck. Maybe I typed something wrong or asked the wrong question.
I went for a ride today since my buddy just picked up a twister hammerhead 150 to add to the stable, and my engine was acting up horribly. I checked the usual, and found the air filter clogged (stock foam filter in the stock airbox). Cleaned it and it ran great.

We run in a heavy sand environment and I was wondering about aftermarket intakes/air cleaners for my engine. It is a predator 420cc (13 hp) clone of a Briggs (I assume). Where is a good place to buy a cone filter with a pre-filter sock and aftermarket exhaust?

They are honda clones, I have looked inside one def. a honda clone. So all most of the honda 390 parts listed here http://www.nr-racing.com/390raceparts.htm With enough money you could make a predator into a stock honda. The biggest differences are painted black vs. Red, Cam bearing is a little bit bigger, cam has ball bearings, longer stroke, and the outside is different.
I think they are good engines. Here are the akg basics http://www.affordablegokarts.com/performance_basics.php

NR-racing.com Its a clone of the GX390 with a little more stroke. If you have about $2000 laying around you can get about 45hp out of one..

Thanks for the replies first off, second, holy crap! Not looking for that much horse power! I re-rigged the throttle quadrant on the engine to actually get wfo, and "adjusted" (bent the crap out of) my gas pedal to achieve actual full boogie. I kinda got "nervous", especially when I was headed down our back straight, (close to 4 acres long) and the rear end started bouncing. At one point, I was looking straight ahead and saw only ground (kart was on front tires only at close to a 45-50* angle and I was moving at a clip near 50 mph). Pucker factor was way up there.
Anyway, I really only needed a better air filter than stock, but do I need to re-jet the carb for that alone?

You ain't got to re-jet the carb at all if it's working decent.
If it's not running too rich or too lean leave it alone.
As far as air filter any K&N style filter and adapter should work fine.

LOL ! sounds like a fun toy ! did you have any issues with it "bogging" a bit in the rough bumps ? i ran into this problem with my stock carb and figured the float was just bouncing around too much and temporarily cutting the fuel feed. i installed a tilly carb, and wow ! what a difference ( peppeir)! plus no "bog" !
good luck with it !

You can mesure the opening hole that comes off your carburator, probably around 1 3/4 inches. Then convert that to mm or just messure in mm. Search the internet for a 1 3/4 air filter (or whatever yours may be). No results search for it in mm, many china sellers have it in mm.

i wouldnt run a cone filter in heavy sand
the finer stuff will get though a cone filter

dont forget these are industrial engines they are made to run in the dust of a building site or on a farm flat out all day
the stock filter is the best filter

its like with the bike engines that we use on the bugys we use the stock air box eventhough cone filters and new jets are a cheap upgrade

the dust will get though

Yeah, but would they be as awesome as a 45hp rotator motor? LOL.
On my cone filter I put one of my mum's 'pop socks' (socks made from tights material) over the top to filter out smaller particles.

That's what I was thinking. I have used cone filters on other off road vehicles operating in very sandy/silty environments with a pre-filter sock with great results. As it is now, I have to take out the stock foam filter and clean it every 30 minutes of operation. It gets old quick.
With the cone and sock, we would have to clean the sock about every 3rd or 4th day of use. Maybe I am wrong though. It has happened before, once.

it does depend where the filter sits
the our buggys race at close quaters so sand dust and rocks are flying everywhere so dust is hard to keep out

if the filter is right above the rear tyres (like most karts) then dust will get sprayed up there

an offroad toy like quad bikes or 4x4s have the filter contained inside the bodywork so naturally dust cant get there so easy

agreed. In my case, the filter would sit facing straight up directly in between the tires.

Hey Grimace, with your machining skills i would recommend putting a rear nerf across your motor to protect it from any impacts. I know it may seem tough that you would back into something but in a wreck or slide anything can happen. You'd hate to destroy your whole carb/exhaust and possibly head on an impact to the back of that thing.

Not a bad idea at all since we have been Gran Turismo racing the crap out of these things. I had to cut some bars and re-locate another. I guess I will have to weld in some extra bars, since I will always be in front.;)
