i know this is not the right place for this question, but i thought maybe some of you would know. im 17 and i want to buy a 1979 trans am, but obviously insurance would be killer. i know there are special rates for classic cars, but can anyone point out classic car insurance for teens rather than just for people over 25...?

insurance companies generally require people to list additional drivers of the vehicles, thus unavoidably raising the rates. i let a buddy take over payments and use my chevy blazer for a couple of months, and when i added him to my list of drivers my insurance rate quadrupled because of his driving record. if you fail to mention additional drivers - it can cause some major legal hassles, especially if there ever was an accident.

insurance rates are higher for "high risk" drivers for a reason. is it fair? no. is it realistic and warranted? yes. insurance companies crunch numbers and statistics constantly, and the higher rates are there for a reason.

people like classic muscle cars for a reason: they're powerful and go fast at the drop of a hat. put that kind of lead under a young semi-experienced driver's foot, and the rest speaks for itself. i'm speaking from personal experience too; a friend of mine threw a big V8 in a little car, and at a party i had had a couple of shots. next thing i know i'm being handed the keys and told some people want a ride home. i thought i was fine to drive. well my friend wanted to impress the passengers, so he told me to go faster, show them what the car can do. next thing i know we're going over 100mph, and a curve came up suddenly in the road. we were lucky - i only flattened all 4 tires, mutilated the rims, and twisted the transmission. we stopped 2 inches away from another car in a convenience store parking lot, after going over 4 curbs, some bushes, between 2 signs...

that night could have gone a whole lot worse! i was 18 when this happened. of course the police showed up, i was arrested for drunk driving, got to spend the night in jail, and lost my license for 60 days.

Try out Hagerty Insurance. I'm active on a early Z car forum, and that's the preference over there.

Oh, heck- even when you DON'T add another driver. One day back when I was college, I got a notice from my insuror that said my rates were going from $tolerable to $astronomical, with no explanation. I was so mad I didn't even call, I just drove there. They figured out my roommate (bad driving record) lived at the same address and ASSUMED he would drive my car now and then! "Oh, F*** no!" Says I. I had to sign a waiver that said that I would basically hide my keys, install a LoJack, and keep an underfed, maltreated Rottweiler in the car to ensure that he would never drive it, or else I would be hung, drawn, quartered, beheaded, keel-hauled, exiled, castrated, and peed on. Wow.

Most Classic car insurance policies require that you only drive the car under 2 or 3 thousand miles a year,
AND that you have another vehicle that you would normally drive on a daily basis...

You'll also find that many of the major Insurance companies offer a special/classic-car policy (very similar to Hagerty's) at a reduced rate... But they dont advertise these policies, so you'd have to contact your Insurance company and ask.

I had my restored 57 chevy Insured (full-coverage, including a $30,000 replacement rider) through State Farm for a long time. Then when I heard about Hagarty (and other similar policies) I called my State Farm rep and asked If they had a similar policy. They did. I got it, and It ended up saving me lots of money...

I'd imagine most Insurance companies might have an age restriction on these types of discounts, but you could try contacting several different Insurance companies to hopefully find one that didnt.
