If your just going for 1 seat.... piece of cake!... school(elementary) seats(cut off legs, or leave alil in front and your seat leans back...any swivel, desk chair(remove swivel/hydrolic lift mount under seat, add a 2x4 under front, bend/shorten arm rests to preference...blah blah blah i can go on... it's the 'bench' seats that tend to pose a problem in making... but I did make my own...

I was thinking about boat seats but they're really not cheap. Whether one seat or two a piece of plywood to mount them to and I like the office chair idea that Halfbreeder suggested.

The problem with that and fabric (vinyl would be ok) is weather resistance.

I used vinyl for my seats. The manufacturers used it yrs ago n it still stands up to the elements if taken care of(try to keep clean n outta direct sunlight, should last forever). I sewed my red stripe but thats the only sewing i did. If you fold/tuck proportionally on both 'sides' evenly n cut off excess itll look 'good'. I used an old cushion outta old loveseat that that was on side of road. The 'tabs' along the bottom n back, are just upholstery snaps(coned out thin washers basically)screwed in w/ multipurpose screws.

Vinyl- 15$
Upholstry tabs- 2$
Screws- 2$
Hours to mentally create....-.... Bout 8hrs all together. Only took hr to 'make'.

I went to the local auto upholstery guru with two boards and he padded them (nice cushy feel) and covered with hot pink outdoor vinyl with a soft feel. He stitched in "HOT MOMMA" in big black script. Put in nut plates on the boards to bolt back into my daughters kart. $45.......
