It appears my new Max Torque clutch (12 tooth) wants a #35 chain while the wheel sprocket/chain are #40, so can you get a 12 tooth Max torque sprocket for a #40 or do I try to get a new wheel sprocket and chain? I'm learning lots.....the hard way it seems. Searching around, nothing really apparent, most #40 sprockets are 10 tooth.
Wheel sprocket is 72 and appears welded, i don't think it comes off, haven't dug that deep yet.

That would work, but it really comes down to how much space he has to work with, his fabrication skills, how small the budget really is, etc. Another thought is that he might want to standardize on one size chain throughout the build, for ease of future maintenance.....

I just ended up buying a 10tooth clutch for a #40 chain. Hope that wasn't stupid. I guess I have a new unused Max Torque clutch for sale! 12 tooth, 3/4" shaft for #35 chain.

It's simply going to give you a numerically higher gear ratio; which may be beneficial if you are more into off roading with your kart. You are merely trading in a little of the top end for more torque off idle and at lower speeds.

Care to share a pic of your axle/sprocket hub? My stock Manco axle (I'm assuming other manufacturers do this also) has welded keyways; which makes it appear as if the hub is permanent, but in fact it not. It may be possible for you to change that rear sprocket so you can experiment with gear ratios.

If it turns out this is the case, keep that #35 clutch. There are much more options available for #35 chain, which may also may replacement gears much cheaper.
