Chain taughtness?

How taught should the chain be on the sprockets? I'm using a centrifugal clutch with a tecumseh 6.5hp OHH60.

1/4 inch of play, loose but not super loose to where it has the tendency to pop off the gears.

Up to about 1/2". Better slightly loose than too tight.

Thanks for the quick responses guys. As you can tell I'm still new to this!

I had my chain from the engine to the jackshaft to tight. I hit the gas and a loud BANG! chain snapped in half. so yea keep it loose but not loose enough to jump teeth
