I picked up a drive sprocket for my gokart buggy from Grainger and the teeth are to fat for the chain, the specs on the kart says I have a #420 chain, the sprocket I picked up is for a #40....does chain get smaller as the numbers go up? Will a #41 fit a #420 chain?

no, there not exactley compatible, but pretty close, if its way to small you might either have the wrong chain, or messed up somewhere, its probablly 35 chain

well the size 420 is a between size of #40 and #41 ... The 420 will work unless the size is #41 only and not #40
Check it out here

Chains are measured by the distance from the center of the pin to the center of the next pin, and go by the 1/8 inch. The first number is this distance (IE, 1/2 inch is four 1/8s aka a 40 series chain) The second number, if a zero, is a single row chain. If a two is a double row chain, three is a triple row, etc. (I have seen and worked with a double row 120 chain, that is much bigger than what is used on motorcycles!) There is more but for what we are doing this is enough info.

BTW, the difference between a 40 and a 41 is the 41 is a lighter duty chain. It is narrower than a 40 chain.

Ok, I get it now. I picked this sprocket up at Grainger and the teeth were too fat to fit in the chain pitch, should I get a #41 or a #35 instead? everything else fit great except the fat teeth.

No order size #40 chain which is stronger and better..

I already have the chain on the kart, I am just replacing a sprocket and trying to get the correct one from grainger...I can always order one from the net but with shipping and wait time......

yes, the pitch is the same. Thanks for info I did not know if a #41 would work with a #420 chain...chain sizing can be confusing if you have never done it before :)

I had that problem. If the pitch is correct, just grind down the sides of the sprocket with a bench grinder. Mine has been working just fine like that.
