Chain Size and source for sprockets

Hello, I'm just getting started on an electric cart project. We have bought an old rolling chassis that’s pretty complete. We want to run electric and keep it cheap for starters as this is as much about the build with my son as it is the cart. I figure that once its working and I see that he’s interested, we’ll upgrade motors and that sort of thing.

OK, so I picked up a 500watt, 24v (I know it’s small) motor from TNC it has a sprocket for a #25 chain on it. The axle on the cart has a sprocket on it that I’d just assume not have to deal with replacing. Anyone know how I can figure out what chain goes on the axles sprocket? And then where’s a good place to order a new sprocket for my motor to match?

Thanks a bunch for the reply and the info.

I had seen guides like that for determining the chain size by measuring the chain, but not exactly sure how to go about this by measuring a sprocket. Measure from low point to low point between the teeth?

The motor is basically this one (copied from another thread) with this sprocket if this helps.

OK, I was assuming that the spacing may change depending on the radius of the sprocket and the number of teeth.

Guess I was thinking of this wrong.

We figured out that the sprocket on the cart is a #35

I haven't been able to figure out where to get the sprocket for the motor yet.

I'll look around but would need more info:

What brand/model and shaft diamiter is your motor?
Does it use a keyway (if so what size key does it use?)
If no key is used, does your motor shaft have splines or a certain width flat section, or ??? to keep the gear from spinning on the shaft besides just the retaining nut?

Yer welcome, too bad your motors website doesn't list your motors shaft diamiter. They do have a #25 replacement gear listed (for your motor) that claims its a 10mm ID/shaft size.

If I'm figuring this all correctly here... I think the ID. of that #35 gear you ordered is going to be just a bit too small to fit your motor, but you might be able to machine it to fit.

ps:
Its really handy to have a pair of calipers http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...=1&ved=0CAwQBSgA&q=measuring+calipers&spell=1 handy for measuring go kart stuff like this so you know for sure what parts and hardware to buy. You don't really need an expensive pair, you can find cheap ones (without dials or digital readouts) for like $10 that measure inch and metric like a ruler and they work just fine for most things. They can end up saving you lots of time, money and aggravation.

You were right that it was too small. But it was close enough to drill out pretty easily. Looks like it will work. Now to mount this thing and see if it will actually move this little cart.
