Here's some chain sizing info: http://www.lawnmowerpros.com/Azusa/Azusa-Roller-Chain.asp
You should be able to use this same info to help confirm what pitch sprockets you have.

If your chains are the corect size for your sprockets, make sure everything is perfectly lined up and you have about a 1/2 or so of freeplay in your chain. Then if your still having trouble, your probably fighting a wore out or meybe a defective chain and/or sprockets and its time for some new ones.

I would think it's be pretty obvious if the chain and sprockets were not of the same pitch, but check all the same. If you can, lay a straightedge across the face of both sprockets to check alignment. Not only do they have to be inline with each other, you need to make sure they're dead parallel. Perhaps your engine had twisted slightly on it's mounts. Another thing worth checking is to go over every link, wiggling it to make sure you don't have one that's stuck or very sticky. That'll throw the chain every time.
Cheers- Chris

The chain size may be stamped on the outer links, look for a number. How's the clutch bushing feel? If there's a lot of slop you may have to replace the bushing or clutch.
