Hello All,

I have a 6-tooth centrifugal clutch hooked up to my Manco 705 Series Go-Kart. I was riding it today and it suddenly stopped gripping and sounds almost like a ratchet spinning fast when I rev the engine. This was after I oiled the bearing so maybe oil got in the clutch? I'm not sure.... Anything helps!

Okay.. we might need more information here ...

a SIX tooth clutch?

What would that be?
10, 12, 16.. sure... or the Maxtorque six-shoe alright.. but six teeth?
what kind of engine would that be attached to? and what chain size?

:useless: I'm afraid :(

It indeed sounds like a sheared key from what you're saying, but six-tooth clutch sonds like there might be more to it than just that *shrugs*

This is a Manco 715 series Go Kart with a 5 HP Briggs 136212-0128 engine. I'm not home for a couple days but I'll take a picture when I get home. About the key, (I don't know much about clutches) is it something in the clutch or the key on the crankshaft?

You could have snapped the clutch spring, if it is of the contiguous coil spring type (one long coil spring routed through the clutch shoes).

No way to really know if the clutch spring is indeed broken without taking the clutch apart. The spring has nowhere to go so it kind of looks intact by default.

First step is to remove that circlip.

It is also quite possible you got oil on your clutch shoes making them slip. Oil should only be applied to the center bushing as you're probably well aware. Don't use a spray lubricant of any kind because it goes everywhere.

really that looks A LOT like the maxtorque six shoe I talked about earlier..
If it is.. I can practically guarantee you the spring will NOT be broken!
if it's a no name clone.. it's very well possible.

So, since taking the shoes and spring apart is a bit of a pain (and it's an even bigger pain to put it back together without losing an eye in the process...)
first remove the clutch from the engine and check the key..

chances are you forgot to install the key and just fittet one of the grub screws inside the keyway.. in which case it WILL BE the cause of your trouble;
it'll also will be unpleasant to remove said grub screw to remove the clutch ;)

So... remove the clutch, then report back what you found.
Remove the front circlip and the bell..
IF the garter spring is broken the shoes will fall out anyways; if they don't do NOT disassemble the clutch any further.
not until you've seen the maxtorque reassembly video at least ;)

Id just go with decreasing using brakleen or the like first(dont take off the inner snap-ring yet)... Reassemble with the drum, test (oil the bushing first before riding, a couple of drops of oil)...... if more issues arise, then do a more detailed disassembly.

may I ask how you managed to do that?

I mean without removing the inner circlip it seems to be nearly impossible...
that is if you havent stopped the rear axle at full speed.. (in which case it's almost more likely that the chain will snap but hey.. you'll never know right ;))

Anyways.
contact amxtorque and see if they can ship you a backplate for the SS;
(maybe ask if that's at all reasonable first.. since the SS isn't too expensive anyways)

then either buy the backplate and follow their instructions...

I got a brand new clutch from BMI and it did that. Kart never moved more than 5 feet!
I bought it as a no name but it was stamped COMET on the back!!!
I got my money back, after much complaining to BMI and sending a video to COMET!!!

I will also say wow.... Thats a new one...
I guess I look into others when I purchase another clutch, as to the integrity of the backplate and "driver sleeve" interfaces...

tbh I don't know how it happened... I was riding and took a turn (not too fast nor sharp) and suddenly I lost all torque... I pulled over and all I heard was my mum yelling "turn it off" so I decided I sign up to this forum and glad I did :)

All is not lost. Heed itsid's advice and you may be able to source a new back plate from the manufacturer.

Are you from the UK?
