Hi,
First I'm really new to all this go-kart/ small engine area. So please have patience.
Ok so my sons go-kart clutch fell apart. The inside spring/ shoes broke and fell out. So far I've figured out that the replacement clutch needs to be a 10 tooth, 3/4 bore, 41,40,420 chain, 3/16 keyway. I've seen dozens of clutchs that match his old one except for the back side. The broken clutch has a longer "collar" (that goes into the engine shaft, with two set screws). Every time I find one that looks similar it's out of stock, and all the in stock ones look completely different on that side.
So my question is does the "backside" of the clutch need to be identical? If the keyway size is the same will be ok? I've also come across a back "hub for the clutch that looks identical. Could that be the issue here? I don't know who put this thing together so I've got no one to ask.
two more questions
Amazon is flooded with foreign made clutchs. Are these junk and if so were do you buy your replacement parts?
When I was taking apart the broken clutch, I noticed that the chain was insanely "tight/kinked" and barely moved at all. I'm gonna guess and say would this have caused the clutch to break?
Ok, I hope this makes sense, cause I really don't know what else I need to do. Thanks for reading!

As long as the bore and sprocket match, any clutch should work. 3/16" keyway will be standard for a 3/4" bore. You might need to fiddle with the alignment a bit, but that shouldn't be a big deal.

Sounds like you definitely need a new chain though. If the chain is nearly seized up, it could cause the clutch to slip and cook, but it probably fell apart from metal fatigue, years of vibration, and lack of maintenance. You COULD soak it in penetrating oil or goop it up with naval jelly and let it sit, then clean it with a wire brush, but chain is pretty cheap. Heck, you can probably find a clutch/chain combo pack, or at least buy from the same vendor and save on shipping.

Thanks!!
My guess is the chain is toast. We could barely even push it into the garage because of that chain. If it's getting a new clutch I'm gonna get a new chain.
Any thoughts on those no-brand amazon clutches? Looks like almost all of them are made in China. No offense to China but I'd rather get a USA made brand, hoping it won't be weak and would last longer. Would the weight of my kids effect anything?
The gokart is a two seater and with my heaviest kids the weight could be max 160, maybe 170.
Thanks so much for the help!! I hate returning online stuff and don't want to get my sons hopes up of riding it only to find out it's the wrong part.

If you don't wanna go with questionable no brand Chinese eBay clutches, you can order a MaxTorque from gopowersports for like 35 bucks.

Agree.. a centrifugal clutch would not last with the kids..

MaxTorque is a brand of centrifugal clutch. They're just more reputable than a no-brand Chinese clutch from eBay, and ordering from someplace that has a brick and mortar store and a good reputation to uphold adds a level of service you won't get from Joe blow selling imported Chinese parts out of his basement

He has a point though... If your son doesn't run it wide open most of the time, the clutch will slip and wear out quickly.

You can get TAV2 clone kits for 60-70 bucks these days. It would breathe a whole new life into the kart, with better torque, a little more top end, and it wouldn't wear out from running at lower throttle like a centrifugal clutch will.

get a maxtorque SS it might not be the one you had before, but's it's a cheap and reliable clutch as per your specs (including the rear plate colalr with set screws)

find it at your preferred shop, or if you can't ebay.. if that fails,
contact maxtorque directly:
http://maxtorque.com/

they'll surely help you out.

PS it's ~20 bucks at mfgsupply for example
