Just did an engine swap (both 5HPs) and upon my test drive I found that my clutch is shot. It's engaging when I'm not on the throttle and smoking....bad. Now I need a new one. It's a ten tooth that's all I know. What is the other numbers shown on the packages? Like 35, 40,41 etc. Is it the amount of links in the chain or something?

Also had to replace a tire so had to remove the sprocket, chain and brake. (Keep in mind they had this thing ripped apart when I got it) When I put it all back together I had two bearings, two small washers and two big washers. Are the small washers supposed to go against the bearings? The reason I'm asking is because the more I tighten the lug the harder it is to spin the wheel. Which I'm scared is gonna fry the new clutch. Right now I just loosened the lug to the point the wheel spins ok but I'm scared its gonna come off while riding.

Let me know what you guys think. Thanks in advance.

You are correct, the small washers should be the same diameter as the inner race of the bearing, this way you can tighten it down and the bearings dont get the pressure applied to the whole bearing, just where they ride on the spindle. Put the small washers against the bearings......But the nut doesnt need to be really tight, since it should be a nylon lock nut to prevent loosening.

Ok, Thanks. And how about finding the "correct" replacement clutch? Do you know?

It needs to match your chain size, if you dont know then check the chain, if it clean enough you may be able to see the size (that is the numbers 35, 40,41). A 35 chain has to have a 35 clutch, but 40/41 are interchangeable.

Northern tools normally stocks replacement clutches in the $50 range that would work as long as the kart isnt used offroad or on hilly terrain. In that case it would burn up again in a short time.

Measure the distance between teeth: 3/8" will be #35 chain, 1/2" will be #40 or #41 chain. Being 10t, my guess is it's #40 or #41

I'm not sure what the tooth count is on the sprocket. It's on my grandmas farm right now so I'll count next time I get over there.

I think it's a 41. Thanks Fabroman, didn't know I could measure the teeth. I'll get it now.

So what should I get if I were to do some off-roading? Strictly farm/cow fields with some small incline hills. Thanks

A gas mask for the stinky rides?
