Im looking at trading for this carter go kart
Here is the pic the owner sent me
I tried google but couldn't come up with anything that looked exactly like it.
ad says it has a 5 hp Tecumseh engine...and that it was running when parked (which looks like it was some time ago)

Is this something a 250 pound man could ride? I assume it wont go much more than 20mph with a 5hp engine.

anyone know the model? would you say it was worth $75?

man, that was fast!
I didn't think it looked like it was built for a adult to ride.
1 wheel drive sounds kinds sucky. Not much good for trails.
But heck, if I can get it by trading 2 power wheels that I have $75 into and can get it running by cleaning the carb then my kids can ride it and have some fun.
Can I assume that I can adjust the throttle to make the speed limit whatever I want (like 10mph)?

You can assume that, but it doesn't work like that. There are a lot of factors that determine speed, and doing 10mph is kinda difficuly to say the least.

You cannot just limit the throttle. Most karts have a centrifical clutch that engages by rpms. Limiting the throttle will not allow the clutch to fully engage and cause it to slip and burn itself up.

ah, thank you for that info. Good to know ahead of time. I suppose the clutch has to do with the weight limit as well...too much weight and the clutch might slip and burn up right?
I should have the kart by the end of the day. Ill upload more pics then and should have some idea how close it is to drivable.

You CAN gear it extremely high though with compound gearing, so that it will have a low end speed.of around 10-15 mph, BUT that costs, and you might end up with a kart that just spins the wheels lol.

Not HIGH - LOW. So many people get it wrong. When you gear low, the numbers are big (like 10:1). This means more torque and less speed. When you gear high, the numbers are small (like 3:1). This means more speed and less torque

Ghost, when you get the kart, count the teeth on the axle and clutch sprockets and post here. Rear tyre diameter as well. We will help you with gearing. Lots of pics as well

And thats why so many people get it "wrong" lmao. Whrn I say high I mean numbers wise, as going up in ratio, numbers, to me at least would be getting higher in those ratios/numbers.

Either way though we mean the same thing. Just to me somethig like 10:1 is high, both in numbers and ratio/revolutions because it is taking a higher number of revolutions of the driver to turn the driven one revolution.

Something like 6:1 is lower because its not only a lower number, but its taking a lower amount of revolutions for the driver to turn the driven 1 revolution.

In the end what we say may be different, but what we mean is the same. Kinda a you say tom-a-toe I say ta-ma-toe thing.

Nope cause the other way confuses the he|| out of me lol, and from your own post, so many people get it wrong, so it must confuse us all.:lolgoku::huh:

I'm just messin with ya landy, but seriously thats how I've always known it, short gears (small, low) and tall gears (big, high)

The.ither way to me is just backwards and makes it.sound more confusing and complicated.

Again though you say tomato I say tomato.

Lol, lets just say it like this tommy-toes!

But seriously, so there is no confusion, we both mean that he needs to gear more to torque. Higher tooth count axle sprockets to achieve something like 10:1 11:1 etc.

Loke landuse said, when you get it count your clutch sprocket teeth, axle sprocket teeth, and let us know the rear tire size, and we will try to get you as xose to that as we possibly can.

no worries guys...Ive been doing stuff with RC trucks for years and understand how gearing effects speed and torque. It can confuse some tho...you can increase the size of one gear but if you increase the size of the other it has the opposite effect (pinion vs spur) that messes some people up. But I burnt up enough motors in my early days and learned how important gearing is and how just a couple of teeth can make a huge difference.

I was reading last night about cen clutch vs torque converter. From what I gather, any kart that is made for an adult would likely have a torque converter because (as I read) most cen clutches are only able to handle about 400 pounds.

I may be getting ahead of myself thinking about a way for it to handle my weight or how I could make it slower for the kids....I may have to put a chunk of elbow grease into it before it will even run. Just stuff like general maintainance (which clearly has not been done) should be done before it is used.

A centrifugal clutch can handle quite a lot of weight, but as soon as you want a bigger kart that might go offroad (with large tyres) then you get into the realm of a TC

but if the specs for this kart says riders up to 150 pounds...wouldn't that mean that my extra 100 pounds could cause the clutch to slip? Or is that rating conservative?

I realize from reading that this kind of kart isn't meant for offroading or steep hills ect....better for pavement or flat fields.

Id really like a 2 seater meant for offroading...but since im trading stuff that cost me $50 I figure why not. at least it will be a start in karting.

Got the Kart
I don't think it is bad looking considering the owner said it hasn't been used in a couple of years.

The gas was yellow. No gas is getting through the carb (no surprise)

I couldn't get it to fire with starting fluid, so then I checked for spark and got none. Then someone remembered to check for a kill switch

With the switch in the right position it did fire with starting fluid shot into the spark plug hole.

Tomorrow I will take off the carb and give it a good cleaning.

Looks like it has a belt and chain. Chain looks rusty...will that be an issue?

Like the pedal extensions the owner put on for his 5yo?
