I've got a 22mm Keihin carb on my 5hp Briggs flathead. I'm also using a Pulse fuel pump. The brass overflow tube in the bowl is cracked and leaks despite a repair with JB weld. All the gaskets need replacing also. It's cheaper and easier to just buy a new carb. I found this one in the below pic. My question is, is there a better 22mm carb to use specifically with a fuel pump? I read that carbs used with a fuel pump have different size float valves or float valve seats. What carb should I buy? Thanks.

I wish I knew more about Flathead carburetor options. All I seem to see and the first results I get are the stock carbs used for WKA racing and what-not.

Then there's stuff like Tillotson, Walbro and Mikuni if you are interested in spending more money.

I've heard good things about Tillotson. On the engine analyzer simulator demo, it allowed you to choose the specs from the 5HP Tillotson Carb.

Will the Tillotson work ok with a fuel pump?

So I was looking at my carb up close and noticed that a small number 26 is stamped into the opening mouth of the thing. Does this mean it is a 26mm carb? I measured the inner diameter of the part that faces the engine and it was 22mm. In the pic you can see the number 26?

i have heard that the mikuni is a good one for gas, and the tillotsons do best with methanol.

Mikuni is very similar to the keihin, which is what I have. I love it and it ran very strong before my brass overflow pipe cracked in it. I am leaning toward the Mikuni althought the cheap version is only about $25.

That was a rave review. So rebuilding it is out of the question due to cost?

This carb needs new gaskets and a brass overflow/bowl vent tube. I'd rather have a brand new carb than try to track down all the parts it needs.

I just ordered a Mikuni 22mm. I'll update after it gets here.

Good deal. Looking forward to the results.

Watching a few videos on U-Tub shows that adding these newer/aftermarket carbs gives a lot of reliability to the old Briggs in the form of one-pull starts, etc. Has that been your experience as well?

That looks familiar. :) So far so good. Only have four hours on the engine but it looks promising with just the honda clone carb on it that i got for $15 on ebay. Im actually wanting to get the mikuni 22 mm so im excited that mr kentucky boy is putting on on his. the gx200 carb is just a little too restrictive

I'll update as I get the new carb and test it out. Carb should be in in a few days. I also bought a Predator yesterday as a backup if I can't get the Briggs tuned in right. It's just a backup though. I really want the Briggs on my kart, it's just a cool American made motor.

I custom made an intake. Not that hard to do just time consuming. Hopefully I can just bolt the new carb on it.
