I got this engine with the kart and I don't have an air cleaner for it. What carb is it? I'm used to the center mount air cleaner and not too familiar with this design. Also, I keep seeing reference to a Tilly carb. I guess that means a Tillitson, right? Is there such available for my 5HP B&S? Thanks.

That looks like a Briggs Pulsa Jet carb. They are good carbs, easy to tune. With an adapter, you can install a Tillotson. They are great once you go through the learning process to get them tuned right. I would keep the original and find a filter for it. Ebay should have some.

One of my main motivations is that with the steel tanks getting so difficult to find, perhaps a remote tank for the Tillitson would be easier to source in the future.

It’s a Briggs fixed-jet Pulsa Jet, not the 'far better' adjustable jet version (usually the kind with a slide choke) but it’s still good, just simplified. The Raptors used a special version of the latter but eliminated the choke and had other enhancements.

The filter you may want for that is the stock one which looks like a clamshell (a top and a bottom) affair or a Big Mac box. It uses a good quality flat “accordion” paper filter with steel mesh backing but personally I prefer an air filter assembly that doesn’t cover so much of the carburetor.

What you can do is use a PVC end cap as an air filter adapter, about 2 or 2.5” diameter and make sure the bottom is perfectly flat by sanding against a plate of glass or tile. Bore a large hole in the center (same diameter as the carb throat), and two holes for the mounting screws. Then you find an air filter that fits the OD of the cap...

Cut your own carb-to-filter-adapter gasket from a cereal box.

The stock/factory air cleaner assembly is this:

I believe they made Pusla jet and Vara jet carbs. The Pulse jet carbs pumped fuel up into a small bowl inside the 3 quart fuel tank.( like this one) and the Vara jet did not use that small bowl inside the tank. Those ones ran rich with a full tank and leaned out as the tank got low. This looks like a Pulsa jet to me. More pictures would verify any opinions.

Why do you need to worry about finding another steel tank? It looks like you have one. How many do you need? They only rust out if they are severely neglected.

I'm trying to get my Dingo going. A fellow gave me a 5HP b&s that has spark and compression but no carb or tank.

So, not the one in your picture? A Tecumseh carbwith an adapter is MUCH less expensive and easier to set up. Still needs an adapter, but still good adjustability and perforfance. Most performance guys will sat go get a slide carb. I'm not one of them. I keep my governors operating for safety and reliability.
EBay does sell the stock parts you would need, but not always, and generally not less than $150. For that money, you could have a Predator 212.
Free engines are not always the cheapest route to get a kart going.

Like Sparkwizard is leaning, Briggs used “regular” float bowl carbs with the 13 cu.in. engines as well, a separate intake manifold and the fuel tank mounted on the other side of the engine, "Tecumseh flathead style” you might say.

This is the carburetor you appear to have:

Site is excellent for the carb's theory of operation, the way the diaphragm fuel pump works and so forth.

I think he is trying to get a Dingo running. and he stated his freebie engine is missing carb and tank. That is an excellent site for Briggs carbs, but I think OP is asking for suggestions on non-Briggs carbs, since he doesn't have one, currently. That is why I suggested a Predator as a cheaper solution than sourcing adapters and parts to get a free engine running. Isn't a Dingo a pretty big kart for a 5 horse flathead, anyway?

Actually, a bit of both. I'd like a float style for the purple kart and a tank mount style for the Dingo, which I expect to sell.
