Hey guys I'm new here and need some of your advice. I have a GX160 bone stock and I cant make it run right. Whenever I pull the plug, it is always sooty. The only time I can make it run right is at idle. Even then it doesn't really do anything, it just stays the same burnt black as when I cleaned it. Anything over idle will make it run rich, as said above with the spark plug. The strange thing is though, that the mixture screw/pilot jet is all the way in, letting no fuel pass. Didn't know if it would make a difference, but I cleaned the carb out. Unfortunately, I have not had a chance to run the motor, however I think that I may have made my problem worse. When I took out the main jet, it was pretty well clogged. I think I may need a new jet altogether, but if you guys have any other ideas, I'd be more than happy to hear them. Thanks!:idea2:

UPDATE: Got to run the engine again, and boy does a clean carburetor make a difference. So much louder and much more power. Much peppier now. Took some plug readings literally a minute ago from writing this. To my not so great surprise, the engine idles cleanly:thumbsup:
I did take pictures, but all of them were blurry.
What I was more surprised about is that it ran clean at WOT. Thinking of it now, it really shouldn't surprise me, as it was idleing of off the main jet. (mixture/pilot jet screw still all the way in.) Anyway, I'm very happy now. Thank you to all that replied and gave advice!:wai:

Ok, I'm confused, everything you said contradicts everything you said...

-The only mixture screw/pilot jet on a GX160 is the idle jet; if it's screwed all the way in, it shouldn't idle at all
-Likewise, if the main jet was clogged, it won't run rich, it'll run lean

See what I mean? Nothing makes sense...

When you cleaned the carb, did you poke out all the channels with thin wire? This should work on the jet too...

Oh, one more thing, :useless:

Is there a possibility that he scratched the inside of the jet

Uhhh, Tony, my gx160 has an air mix screw on the carb, and an idle screw. Remember last year, when I drilled into my carb, while sleeping? I posted a pic of how the end of the screw was broke and how I out a new slot in it..... The clones don't have it, but the Hondas do. It's at the left side, in back....
To the OP, if it's in all the way, unscrew it 1&1/2 turns..... And see what happens.....

Does the plug ever appear wet (damp) or just black and sooty? Did you remember to reinstall the main jet? Is it tight? Any chance you hogged it out while cleaning? What did you use to clean it?

Only thing that comes to mind with whats being described is the float level. bent or damaged same with float shaft and also the needle and seat valve may not be sealing when bowl is full.

I hate to say it, but it's all true. It is idleing, just off the main jet. And it is running rich. I'll try to get some pictures if I can. I agree with you on how this contradicts everything and thats why I've come here. I need advice. Thanks for the response

The plug is always dry as a bone, just sooty. The jet is installed, and it was tight when I took it out. I also reinstalled it tightly. I'm confident that I didn't wallow it out. I cleaned it with some detergent and a thin piece of wire.

Thanks for replying man. How would I go about testing the needle and seat, I'm not quite sure how.

Simplest way would be to take the bowl off then turn the gas on the fuel should be trickling through then gently push up on the ends of floats till it closes off the fuel flow completely, floats should be somewhat level to the base of carb when the fuel shuts off ( i'm not sure what the float level adjustment are) If it does not shut off completely or it takes a lot of pressure on the floats to get it to shut off then take out the needle and seat valve and inspect the end of needle for wear, pits and make sure it is clean

thebroketeenager, FYI: to the right of the qoute button is a button with "+ on it, that's the multiquote button...

When you want to quote multiple posts, click that button on all but the last desired post then, on the last one, simply click the quote button; that way all your responses end up in one post as opposed to the 5 you have now
