2001 Oldsmobile Aurora. Burns oil (apparently need to add every 3 months). A few dings and a slightly bent rim (pothole, apparently). Is $1500 a good deal. Something is telling me that it is not. I haven't seen it in person. A relative of mine is selling it.

As long as its only using a quart every 3 months and being driven a decent distance over that time, its nothing to worry about.

Emission Testing? What's that? So it's OK for it to burn a quart in 3 months. It just makes me nervous. I don't want the engine to blow up on me.

emission testing is when they test your car exhaust and see what emission you make, to much and you cant get it registered

Find out first- many jurisdictions have it, including here. They put your car on a dyno, hook a "sniffer" to the tail pipe, and run it at predetermined RPM for set times. If emissions exceed predetermined levels, the car is failed, and you cannot register/renew the vehicle until the appropriate repairs are made.

That sounds like socialist Canada. Nothing none of that in the land of the free. Except for California. We ought to kick those fools out. So toystory, what's your say on is it a good deal?

Socialist Canada? WE didn't conceive the idea. Not to mention, it's not necessarily nation wide here- I only know that it's implemented in most of Ontario.

And no, I don't think I'd be on that car. I'll put up with a lot for $1500, but I want the engine halfway healthy. Relative? How 'bout a good ol' family discount? And again, make good and sure you don't need a smog.

EDIT- You're lucky... http://www.dmv.org/mi-michigan/smog-check.php

My main rule is; if you're paying over 1 grand for a used car, if it has any mild to serious issues with the motor, run the hell away find something else.

:mad2::mad2::mad2: More than 25 states have some form of testing. You just made an idiot out of yourself.

Depends on what you call a used car and your level of mechanical ability.

Sigh. I guess I should have used the sarcasm tags,

Used car: No warranty, well over 150k miles. I've done a wide range of engine rebuilds for different reasons, never to fix a vehicle that wasn't worth it imo though. With exception of the isuzuI had back in the day, I had like 4 different 2.3's for the particular truck I had and I kept that thing running for ages just because it was cheap and easy.

I can't speak for the car, although I wouldn't, personally, pick up an 11 year old American made car...period. Regardless of price. I like foreign makes (older American cars are well built, not so true now). Secondly, emission testing is done in the Pittsburgh area due to population density and number of cars in the county. It isn't done in surrounding counties, but is here. Pittsburgh is in a predominantly Democratic county, but is far from Socialist.
