I'd look for an old Honda or Yota.
I've been driving an '87 civic as a work beater.paid $500 for it.put in a wheel bearing and been getting a reliable 33 mpg for the past 12K miles.
Driving home 3 weeks ago I spotted an '86 accord, gave $850 for it and have already been offered $1500.
They're both carbureted and easy to work on.
If you're on a tight budget, those beamer parts are going to eat your lunch.

Oh yeah.No fart cans!

I highly doubt your gonna find EVERY part you need for a BMW in a salvage yard. That one part you cant find salvaged is gonna cost you an arm and a leg.

I bought a '79 F150 this spring for $1800 and have less than $1000 in it. It starts every morning with no problems. Domestic=good

Granted an old truck drinks gas and isnt at all forgivable on my end, but Ford MADE good cars.

I still dont understand the "buy crap first" mentality. IMHO, if your not a spoiled idiot and value your vehicle, your not gonna tear it to shreds. The accidents that people I know have had involved utter stupidity, and lots of it.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. My parents to seem to be prepared to help out at all. I so far have saved up only $700, and I don't know how to make money these days.

Parts wont really be an issue and really arent that expensive if you look in the right places and you guys should know that you would be surprised on with what you find at the salvage yard.

I have a thing against domestic, my wifes car is doemestic its the biggest POS.

And I rather buy a POS first because one its cheap, 2 i have enough knowledge and common sense to not **** it up even more 3 once im stable its a possible project car.

I have 1500 saved up and im just looking for a POS that catches my interest.

what does she have and why is it a pos?

i guess depending on where youre at determines the amount of eurojunk in the local yards i suppose.

Whatever it is its going to need parts and maintainence. I hear it all day long, "i own this make model and it had a bad (part name here), (insert make her) are pieces of ****!"

I run a parts store and see what the gereral idea of cost import vs domestic and upkeep. Plus my friend had a few BMWs, what they ended up needing was expensive, mostly difficult to replace, and dealer items most of the time.

Get what youre comfortable with either way. :)

She has a 03 Expedition which actually is nice to have in all but its annoy when it has its electrical issues.

Windows, radio and heater works when it wants to so Id ended up trouble shooting it and came to the ended up with a faulty control module.

And Im not expecting to get a cheap car that has no issues at all. Im fine with that I expect to have its issues thats why i want it to relieve stress turning wrenches.

And parts really arent hard to find cheap bud forums, salvage yard, ebay are all avaliable dealership would be a last resort.

I wouldnt even give those two ads a second thought

But the second BMW(of the superior to domestic cars) only has a slight problem of the axle carrier being torn from the body.

Some JB-weld, let it set and then lets roll:thumbsup:

haha you think you can weld that axle thing back? doesnt seem like a huge safety problem because you can still drive it.

ehhh i found a red one at a local dealer that makes the ones on craigslist look like poop. So I'll give that one a shot even though its AT but atleast it has 134k miles and its a 2 door:auto:

14g sheet metal and a tig welder is my secret weapon.

From BMW experience unless you've got quite a bit of money a used one is a horrible idea without a warranty.

How so?
