Just finished doing mods to 212 predator hemi. Put everything together and added oil and gas. Got ready to start it to get it running and get it broken in while I work on axles. Pull rope won't pull. Took spark plug out and it pulls fine. Put plug back and it won't pull.

What gives? Oil in cylinder?

well you likely messed up;

don't try no more without inspecting the engine first...

What have you done exactly to "mod" the engine, maybe you installed something the wrong way around, you forgot to align the markings or simply forgot to reset valve lash properly...

worst case: you broke the governor (or failed to remove it completly; especially that bastardly small washer that likes to stick to the backside of it) which now results in a locked decompression mechanism.

So to be safe... inspect your engine thoroughly..
chances are if you don't, you might be get it running eventually.. and because of a minor issue you'll ruin your engine in just a few minutes.

Due to the fact that you can turn the engine without the spark plug, but with the plug in you cant.
There is something interfering or broken with the Compression release on the cam gear.

The cam came out when I took the side cover off. What about oil in the cylinder? I've heard that this can cause this as well. How do I check compression release?

Oil, gasoline or any fluid in the cylinder would cause hydrolock. But if you took the spark plug out and cycled the engine a few times, it should have been driven out.

open up the crankcase (A MUST!) check the cam is properly aligned (dots must MATCH at TDC)
make sure valve lifters are properly seated on the cam itself..

while you're there.. reach behind the cam gear and see if you can move the small lever there.
If unsure remove the cam and check twice if everythings moving freely..
reinstall cam (lifters.. dots matching yadda yadda)

check everything inside is clean and as it supposed to be.

If that's done, you can close the side cover back up and call it good.

You will likely have found an issue on your way.. and fixed that of course.. so try to pull the rope..
if you haven't check the head (valve cover removed.. head installed) make sure the rockerarms sit nicely on the pushrods.
and while you're at it.. recheck the valve lash.

Once done, you'll surely have a easy to start engine.

hydrolock (oil or gasoline in the cylinder) will spit at you said fluid if you try to start with the plug removed.. no spilling of fluids.. likely no hydrolocked engine.

(get a piece of cotton rope.. COTTON!) and push a generous amount of said rope through the sparkplug hole...
count to ten and remove the rope again (yes that means hold on to one end ;))
carefully to not fry the rope... if there was oil or gas in the cylinder.. it'll now be in your newly soaked rope ;)

Doug, he's twelve give him some slack please

Spindle.. really if there was a superlative of being wrong.. you might have just hit it.
What Doug, so eloquently is trying to say is:
"sit back, listen and learn!"
for now you should not try to make a "good guess" since it's very likely all but good
(the one above is really... uhm.. special?)

I would lmfao if we found he had the wrong plug, and the piston was rammed against it.
it would almost be like a plug being in too tight.

Maybe you should change your career goals to accounting....or at least shut your mouth until you learn something about engines.

BTW: 60 year olds REALLY are 5 times smarter than 12 year olds....deal with it!!!!

Lol

Aw, spindles!

he is picking on all of us occasionally ;)

But this is neither "let's pick on kids" nor "let's pick on old men";
so I might not only ask Doug to not pick on Ethan..
(btw Mr.Spindle.. expert... really?!... wow ;))
but also ask you to not pick on Doug...

We have an engine problem to solve.. so let's focus on that, shall we?
