White tank, and red cover... "usually" indicates a Honda. A vin# off of it would tell all. But from 'this' distance... "looks" like a GX160 w/ an old or improvised air filter... and is that an electric start module I see ziptied to the side of the seat?

I am actually going to look at the machine today. Yes that is electric start, how it is fastened I am not sure since I have not seen her in person yet.

I believe its a clone, I looked and Honda says all their serial numbers have 4 or 5 letter prefixes, this does not.

The serial number starts 168f-2d The only reference to 168f I can find is Lifan which is blue.

I dont know....:(

I'm pretty sure that is a Carroll Stream engine (made for them by Lifan). That recoil design(the way the vents look) doesn't look like Honda's. The recoil design and the air filter set-up matches the Carroll Stream engine. They are red and white like Hondas also.

Honda -

Carroll Stream -

As far as I know they are pretty good. Lifan is said to be one of the better clones, and Carroll Stream states on their website: "Made to Carroll Stream Motor Co. Quality Standards By Lifan", so I'd guess they'd be pretty good.

Looks like a chinese (ugh) clone. The lines/holes/designs and whatnot on starter filter ect are not of honda lineage.

if at first you dont succeed get a bigger hammer....

Well I believe its a Carrol Stream like Extreme posted. However when I contacted C.S. through their site with the serial number and stating I was trying to identify an engine.

They said.... "Please send us a photo of the engine. The serial number doesn't help. I don't think it was from us."

So I replied......."It looks just like the ones on your site, looks like your cs182 & cs190"

Then I received....... "Do you have a question? I don't know whether the engine is ours or not, but I'm not even sure what you're getting at. It may be irrelevant depending on what you need. Please let me know how I can help. Thanks. Dan"

Ugh smh china support :p  lol. The best thing I can say is get detailed pics of the entire motor and the serial num. Starters and air cleaners can be replaced. But a. Crankcase ect not as easy to swap out

if at first you dont succeed get a bigger hammer....

Not sure why you need to identify it. If its a Honda, it will have Honda and the CC's cast in to the block. If not, its a clone. Might be a 5.5hp (168cc) or a 6.5hp (196cc) or could be other sizes as well but not as likely based on the pic you provided. No need to bother Carrol Stream anymore. If you need to figure out if it is a 5.5 or 6.5 just count the number of large cooling fins on the block before the deck surface (where the head bolts on)2 large fins equals a 6.5------1 equals a 5.5hp.

Replacement parts, maintenance....? You cant very well buy just and old part and JB Weld it on, or can you ?

for the most part....YES. Is there a problem with the engine? Do you even own it yet?

There are some exceptions to this but that is mostly with the Predator models

Ok that a neat idea using the fins like that I usually measure the bore with calipers and get the spec of diff engines till I find a match. Rmm has a point honda has identification cast into the block. And unfortunately even with chinese clones motors may look identical but many use completely diff parts. Add in ones stroke might be a tiny tiny bit longer with just a larger bore to still keep the same cc some might be good with one type of intake Restriction (honda xr stock engine finickiness) while not running at all with one. Tiny change one may use one resistance another something diff. For a few of many examples for the most part. Sometimes you can swap entire. Carbs around....if the bolts and ports match but that's not exactly a given what's the model serial ect numbers? I've got a. Few suppliers I can run it by to see

if at first you dont succeed get a bigger hammer....
