It looks like it is some type of ring sprocket? And its bolted to some other part that is attached to the axle. Is this considered a "Live axle"? Do they still make these? I do not want to buy something that I can not find parts for. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

that would be a live axle. the sprocket is bolted to a sprocket hub, that slides onto the axle and a key is used to lock it to the axle.

youll be able to find parts.

Thanks for letting me know. Is this a run of the mill set up of is it considered "better". It has a 60 tooth now and it seems to be in decent shape, needs to be cleaned since the previous owner had it outside for a number of years.

its my preferred method of axle. 60 tooth is pretty common.

if that was mine, id take it all apart, and if i had a sandblaster id blast them. a wire wheel should work pretty good on a drill or a grinder.

heard of electrolysis? thats what id do on the brake drum. search the forums for "electrolysis"

are you just buying the axle? or the kart?

glad i could help.

I am picking up the entire cart tomorrow morning for $100, I thought that was a pretty good deal, now I need a engine and a few other things as I go along. I was thinking about installing a disk brake if I can. Thanks again.

once you get it, measure the axle diameter. most likely its 1"......

then just find a hub, rotor, and caliper, but youll have to make your own caliper mount.
