Can I save these threads?

My friend who came and welded my kart was hitting the end of my axle with a hammer and screwed up the end of the threads. I can't thread the nut on anymore.





How can I fix these threads?

hmm maybe take a dremel with a cut off wheel and cut the notch off or maybe a sanding barrel and sand it down:idea2:

Just use a file, using a moto tool can take more off that you need.
next time use a soft face hammer or hammer on a piece of wood.

happen to me also on my axle. i got a grinder and a file and fixed it. ill recommend using a dremel. something small

I went at the **** thing with the angle grinder (with a cutting wheel) because I couldn't find a small enough file and I managed to get the bolt on. Thanks

yeah worked with me. thats good you got it fixed. i almost bought a new axle because of my broken threads but, i got em fixed :cheers2:

Lesson#1 (make him READ this!)

If you absolutely MUST hit the end of a threaded ANYTHING, FIRST thread a nut on far enough that it's ALMOST flush (standing out by a thread or so) with the end of the shaft. Beating on it like this will spare the threads from damage, and the end of the shaft from mushrooming.

Years ago, a friend of mine had to do some work on the frontend of his car on a Saturday night. Stupidly, he pounded the balljoint out by hammering directly on the end of the stud. Wasn't 'till reassembly that he realized what he'd done. The local auto parts store wasn't open Sundays, and he had to get to work monday morning. I spent over an hour with my trusty Dremel- first grinding the mushrooming out, and then recutting the threads. He got to work, I learned his lesson... Actually, the lesson I learned was, "A friend in need, is a PAIN IN THE A$$!!!"

Flash forward 15 years, he's still doing stupid spit like that...

Well, he was the one that volunteered to weld my kart for me, so I can't really hold much against him.

always keep the nut on, a couple turns out from flush. then itd never happen.

EDIT: i learned that the hard way.. had to use a dremel on a crankshaft.

They make thread files that work killer. Rent one for free at Autozone.

I would try a small hand file before a dremel.

The thread file would have that perfect in a few swipes.

i think thread file is best for this problem.

in the past(before i discovered the thread file) i have cut bolts down past the damaged threads. It works well but you may find you need a thread file anyway(or something similar like a knife or whatever) to clean up the end so as the nut can get itself started.

I second the nylon hammer when bashing is needed. Leaving the nut on is always a good plan too.
