For the second time, I try to pull start my engine from being cold and the pull just locks up completely. I open up the shaft side and the camshaft came up.

This is a brand new engine and I took the governor out. The first time it happened it was also because the pull rods weren't in place. I put those in place and the engine ran well for 3 times (1 hr).

I just don't want it to happen again, so any advice is appreciated.

update: I took the side panel off and the camshaft was actually in place... maybe it was binding? It was pretty hard to take out. When I put everything back together I tried the pull start to make sure it would turn..... It is hard to pull and the thing kicked back so hard I almost broke it.

Thanks for your help

1. Make sure the dots on the cam & crank are aligned
2. Make sure all valve train components (lifters, pushrods, rockers) are positioned & functioning correctly
3. If the cam was removed, you will need to reset the valve lash because you would usually need to loosen the rockers to set the cam &/or pushrods back in place...

I know the cam timing and push rods are in correctly so I am banking on it being the valve lash. Thanks for your help. I will update when I get the feeler gauges

Well I set the lash correctly and then put new oil in the engine. It seemed to run good for the 15 minutes I let it idle. Then I started it up again with the chain and clutch attached and it ran good for 10 more minutes. Right when I turned it off I heard something clunk and now the pull start is completely seized. When I rotate the crankshaft by hand there is something scraping in the engine.

Please help... I am very frustrated because I am freezing my butt off to try to make this thing work.

Are you sure its scraping in the engine and not in the flywheel cover (pull start)

Yes it is scraping in the engine. The scraping comes from the pointy thing that is on a joint attached to the main smaller gear in the engine... I believe the connecting rod?

I opened up the engine and saw it barely scraping the bottom of it as it comes down. I am not sure if this has to do with why my pull gets stuck though...

On another note, I dropped a screwdriver bit on the outside of the engine while setting up my throttle cable... for the life of me I couldn't find it. Is there any way that thing could have fell into the engine? The engine was totally put back together...

:useless::useless::useless:.......I mean really no..... make thatREALLY! !!!......It's really, really, really. hard to diagnose problems from descriptions alone.......

But when the descriptions are "this thingy connected to that thingy"......:surrender:

Forgive me, that post was just too funny..

Okay, one thing we can say for sure.. it's not the conrod.. it's everything but pointy...

the only "pointy" thing is the dipper arm, and if you haven't touched the crankshaft/conrod.. (which you don't need to when removing a governor) it's impossible for it to touch the bottom of the crankcase!

(it comes close though!)

IF you removed the crankshaft (and conrod)
chances are you did something wrong.
IDK if it's even possible to install the conrod upsidedown,
but if it is, it WILL be really painful for the engine.
the conrod should be at the same UPWARD angle as the cylinder if the dipper is pointing straight down.
like that:
$_1.JPG
Installed, the dipper is pointing nearly straight down all the time, if it's at an angle, you messed up.

But I don't see why you would touch it in the first place..
so, yeah... likely that's not it.

Yes.. the screw driver bit can vanish inside an engine very quickly..
lost it in the head, and it can lock up the lifters, pushrods and cam
(and the scraping noise will be just that!)

get the push rods out, remove cam and lifters and check!

You MUST find it...
Now, reassemble and check the valve lash
(@ compression stroke, TDC!)

Good luck!

I don't see any thing out of the ordinary but at this point you need to make sure both valves are where they are supposed to be, as in not laying on top of a piston. If thats good then I would disconect the rod, push it all the way up out of the way and remove the crank. Check case bearings etc... You def have a serious issue in that motor.
