Here's a one off....

I'm a part owner of the family farm: Dads' the major owner and investor. Five years ago, he bit the bullet and signed on the line for the first piece of new equipment on the place in over two decades, a Great Plains no till grain drill. Our old drill needed ~$20,000.00 in parts, plus who knows how much labor because it was just plain worn out. It cost us almost that much in the :censored: poor stand we got the last time we used it that year. Imagine our surprise when a dealer offered him $17,000.00 in trade towards the new drill.

The machine has been awesome; up until this spring.

Basically, Dad couldn't change the seed rate on it; he didn't think to much about it until it was close to harvest. The crop stand wasn't right, and the yeald reflected it. When he and my uncle went to plant our winter wheat crop, they confirmed that something was wrong, and traced it down to the seed transmission.

Here's where I come in; Dad got a quote of $800.00 for parts, $200.00 in labor for the closest dealer to look at it. He tracked down a parts diagram, then asked me to look at it.

Guess what; it's a Peerless lawn mower transmission.

When I opened it up, here's what we found.....

As you can see, water got in and made a mess. I'm going to drag the thing to work so I can clean it up in the solvent tank, then figure out what parts need to be replaced.

The questions for Doc Sprocket (and anyone else interested) is what's the best place to get parts, what's the best way to water proof this thing, and what's the best grade of grease to repack it with???

Like I said, this is a one off....

well the internals look somewhat similar to what you'll find in a peerless 700...

chances are the dimensions are identical (ease of manufacturing and such) and thus compatible.

Maybe even the spare parts have the same numbers *shrugs*

So my question is this: have you checked the numbers on the parts diagram (like say the spur gear) if you can trace the part on the internet?

obviously you'd need the shift/brake shaft, but a single matching part, can help tracing down 'replacement' part numbers ;)

is it by chance part# 776370 ?

Sorry forgot.. a similar peerless (9100 series)
uses the following grease and sealant:
pt# 788067B Grease (32 oz. bottle Bentonite grease)
pt# 510334 Gasket Eliminator (Loctite #515)

I need to add another photo: Great Plains did a decent job of providing a weather cover; apparently in our case it wasn't quite enough....

As for gasket sealer, this thing was well sealed around the case halves: it's where the various shafts protrude that's the problem.....

Oh I see.. well I think the outer o the bushing could use some sealant, the inner should seal against the shaft properly .. as long as neither the bushing nor the shaft itself is worn ...

so yeah.. uhm :(

It looks to be bronze bushings, and I doubt you can't just swap it for a ptfe bushing, since no matter how durable a ptfe bushing is, it's not as rigid as a bronze one I'm afraid...
but just in case, if you happen to know the exact size, I can see if I can find matching ptfe bushings.
It also seems to be sealed with rubber o-rings judging by the grooves,
maybe they hardened out? (they need some grease every now and then... vasoline will do the trick ;))
Anyways, I hope with new bushings and new O-rings the gear box is splashproof again.

To reduce the amount of water reaching the transmission even further
just close the box completely,
and let the chain break through a dual row of nylon brushes (1/4" apart)
that way even the water attached to the chain will have a hard time reaching the sprockets and dripping onto the shafts.

Other than that there's not much you can do I'm afraid.. well covering the trans in repellant (spray grease) twice a year but that'll be a huge mess next time you need to maintain it. *shrugs*
