if you are going for something simple, google sketchup is easy to use.

I got a copy of solid works for free. They sell them for very expensive and you have limited use. Im doing my bit for local engineers by letting them copy it and i got a crack code so its all cool.

Google sketch up is great though.

SolidWorks is good, that is what I use also, 2004v, I love it

Autodesk inventor if you can find a free copy, I think they might have a free watermarked student edition. You can even stress test your designs.
