buying engine help

hey fellas, just need some advise for what cheap engine i should buy for my dirt kart designed for fun.
iv currently got a 5hp briggs and stratton that wont fire due to carby failure, and well its in 1000 bits lol.

i was thinking, instead of rebuilding that engine and still flipping the coin as to whether it would start again, should i buy one of those chinese OHC honda replica's and be done with it. wheres the best place to buy one, as i dont wanna spend more than aus. $200

i also saw an engine on ebay that looks the same, 6.5hp and electric start, but im a bit hesitant to buy a no brander over the internet, what u think?

any advise will be appreciated.

I would try rebuild it and spend a day or two on it before spending 200 bucks. There not that hard to rebuild. And technically it can only be in about 32 parts. XD Um those honda clones are good but make sure the shaft is 3/4" and not 20mm, the 20mm clutches are hard to find and a bit pricey. Im in aus to and i havent found a honda clone for 200 or under here yet. The cheapest ive found is about 220-250 aud.

A 5hp wont really give u a hell of a lot of speed offroad, it will go fast on road and grass and hard dirt n gravel and stuff but not boggy sand if thats what ur gonna do. The honda wont be much better either. Its cheaper to buy a 2nd hand dirtbike engine, they can be picked up for under 200 and will give u plenty of speed, torque and acceleration. The only tricky part is hooking them up but in the end there a lot cheaper and better. A honda with 1000 bucks worth of aftermarket parts wont ever be as good as a 250cc bike engine.

So it all depends on what ur terrain is ur going to ride on. If u dont want the 5hp u can always send it to me. I dont mind, im in perth. XD

Or you could get a bike or sled engine for under $200, comes with cvt (140 extra if bought for clone). A 440 sled engine will put out a minimum 40hp.

ha ha cheers, well iv done so many briggs rebuilds i could probly do it blindfolded and tide up lol, so thats not a problem, im just keen to get riding again ;).
the terrain is only hard dirt and mud too.

if i could get a dirtbike engine for around the same price i would so do that, its what iv always wanted to do.
i thought they are heaps expensive though n thats why i didnt mention it.
where would i look to buy a 2nd hand 125cc 2 stroke engine.
last time i looked on ebay, a 1990's model 125cc bike engine was like $600+.

Nah look in the paper. Also u can go to like auctions like pickles auctions. They hav smashed up bikes, u could probably grab one cheap there. But the paper is probs ur best bet.

oh yer, news paper :thumbsup:

forgot to say that the briggs engine has blown up before n we just welded up the massive hole in the block where the conrod blew through, then baught new conrod cos the cylinder didnt have any damage. one of the taps whit a thread for screwing the starter cord housing has snapped off completely and the rest are all stripped.

im still going to put it together today but its a piece of ****. when it was going, it used to take a ****e load of effort to get it to fire, the compression was soo high the entire kart used to go in the air with it and we had to litterally drown the f@*ker in start u bastard lol.

oh i see, one of those engines. I see what u mean man, they can get annoying when u pull 20 times and it just kicks over 5 times then stops.

im now thinking of buying cheap honda clone or yz125 engine then using briggs for chopper project.

btw what is cgi, mentioned in previous post?

if anybody lives down under in south australia who knows of any shops that wreck and sell 2nd hand bike parts where i could buy a used engine, let me know, cheers.

Yer i might buy a clone soon. I was watching em on ebay and they go for like 180, plus shipping, $225 isnt bad. Oz Auctions sell them, there the cheapest as they go for bids not buy it now. Theres no reserve so if u buy one when there quiet u may pick one up for like 200 shipped or cheaper. The only thing is there 20mm shafts so u gotta lightly sand them and i mean lightly to make them 3/4". Just run the engine on idle and hold a sanding block on the shaft. Thats what im gonna do. Im so eager to get one but i gotta get a job first :(.

yer i think the clutch i hav for the briggs is 20mm, cost like AUD $80 or sumthin.
on ebay there was a clone on $110 bid that ended like yesterday.

im going to ring a bike wrecker store today n see what they hav,
i bet they charge sumthing like $600 for a non running 1990 125cc, il see.

would i be practical to use a small road bike engine? maybe a honda nsr or sumthin. probly more expensive though.

alsome, so its an alright clone, with ELECTRIC START & free battery oh yer. it states value is $999????

also its a 20mm shaft which is or close to my briggs clutch
even turns its self off if oil is too low

high torque REDUCTION 2:1 ratio gear box, whats this do?

what will the performance be like with this 6.5hp motor.
clutch has 12 teeth
sprocket has like 65 (i also have sprockets with 60 teeth)
dirt tires bout 11 or 12 inches diameter, not a lot bigger than slicks

the place where i plan to take the kart is about 300 meters x150 meters

also, will it be noticeably faster than my old 5hp briggs?
