I've been doing some searching but have not seen it done so here goes my newbie question:

Has anyone used a gearbox from a bush hog mower deck to use a vertical shaft engine to a horizontal drive? This is not the exact one that I have but it is close enough.

It is a 1:3 ratio. 1 turn on the input to 3 turns on the output. I was hoping to reverse it but I don't know if it will work that way. Since the gearbox is filled with oil, it will either burn up due to the oil not splashing correctly or the speed. Usually these things are made to take a beating.

It seems beefy enough to work. I think typical tractor PTO speed is 540 RPM. I say try it. If you don't have to much dough in it. Otherwise maybe you could sell it and buy some proven goodies.

If you can't rotate the output shaft it's likely a worm gear that probably won't hold up to high rpm.

Probably not a worm gear though.

Rotates very easily and the gears look like a differential out of a car. It was a $25 purchase. I'll give it a go as I figured it was cheap enough and I am wanting to build more of an offroad buggy for my kids. No speed wanted...
