Building First Kart woah!

Hey guys i'm building my first kart and i know there are a lot of these posts but i want to make my kart right the first time. This is going to be a small project for me and my friend and we're both in high school so we planned for a budget of 1000 dollars. This kart is only in the planning stages right now.

We want to create a kart that goes around 30 mph and is completely electric. The Chassis we plan to use is the Viper STX for it's price. http://www.tres-angle.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=GFOM&Product_Code=YK020WX .

At the moment we plan to use a 48V 1000W motor bought from monsterscooterparts. My question is whether or not it is powerful enough for what we need the speed to be. Also, any suggestions for alternatives are welcome.

IMO, with those electronics you wont go fast and you will have terrible take off speed.

i would get one of these before they are discontinued.

Sorry man it's my first kart with no experience but i must use an electric. How fast would it turn out to be though if i used that motor? Any suggestions on better parts that still do not exceed the budget?

Also both me and my friend weigh around 120 lbs each.

the lifan clones (the owner said there probablly not discontuining them) are absolutley a great engine, except if your stupid and have no idea what your doing, it might be alittle hard with mods

The op said it must be electric. I don't think it's going to help if people keep suggesting a gas engine.

Maybe a better angle to try is asking the OP why he is set on going electric.

This motor is a bit small for your project. For you project I would look around for a small forklift motor, like a electric pallet truck or , look for a 24v motor and then you can use it up to around 48v without a problem. you may need a controller to operate it, there are a lots of good 48vDC controller like Curtis, Alltrax, Kelly and you can get them at a reasonable price.

These scooter motors arent expensive. So why not buy two of them. I am planning a go kart with two 1000W 36v motors running on 48v to get more power. The only thing I am afraid of is the heat. These motors arent made for overvolting...

Take a look at this trike. Theres one of these 1000w scooter motors in it.

Top speed is 40 MPH (64 KPH). Thats far more than I expected.

But dont be afraid. If you do not overvolt the motor, it should work fine

Ehm sorry. I just noticed the motor has been rewound with problably smaller wire. Thats why the trike has more power and therefore goes faster. But the small wire heats up more quickly and will fry.

We plan to use electric because the two of us live in a suburban neighborhood and we don't want to be bombarded with noises complaints. Plus we just like the idea of electric because that's the way technology is headed nowadays and i have extensive experience with electric rc cars ( brushless motors going 50+ mph, destroys the engine cars btw).

Question: What's the difference between an overvolted 36v motor to 48v vs a normal 48v motor assuming all other conditions are the same? I understand that the 36v motor will produce more heat but does it create that much more power?

By increasing the voltage on a motor, the current will also be higher and the magnetic field created inside the motor is proportional to the current. A stronger magnetic field gives more power.

its about 200 bucks for the forklift motor on ebay
about 200 bucks for the batteries and controller
and maybe get a cheap frame for around 50 bucks

its possible for that price.

You can never do anything for that kind of power for $500. That 70000W (70Kw) Gabriel's go kart, has Zilla 1000amps controller that $2000+ and lithium batteries that $3000+ and you still need a charger. The motor you can pick them up from $50 at any forklift junk and still have to another few buck to do a few trick on the motor.
I have spent a few buck on mine and still have to spend plenty more, remember I'm doing mine for around 125000W (125 Kw). My motor is 8 inch diameter and Gabriel's motor is 6.7 inch diameter.

For $500 you do something just to play around and do around 20 to 30 mp/h.

@zanga254: Spend some money on 4 lead-acid batteries, a 100-150Amp controller and a motor system with about 2-3kW of power. That'll probably cost more than 500$, but you want to build a kart, you want to drive for many hours, dont you? 15mph wont make you happy

Thanks man great suggestion, but i was wondering if you realized that my budget was $1000 so i can afford to spend a little more.

that $1k isnt just for the electronics though right? you got to get something to put them in first, so youll probably be alot lower by then.
