So basically I have this big school project for a big exam to build a gantry crane any suggestions would be so helpful maybe like the photo below as its a very hard and uncreative project i think and i know nothing about cranes or what kind of a circuit would be best
Im guessing rack and pinion for the mechanism

heres the details

The global standardisation of containers and container handling technology is one of the important innovations of 20th century freight logistics. Central to this transport environment is the gantry container crane. The gantry container crane generally consists of a supporting gantry structure for a trolley unit. The trolley unit will in turn traverse the working area to locate, raise and lower the container.

Design a model of a gantry container crane to the general specifications outlined :

1. The model should have a fixed gantry structure;;
2. The trolley unit should;
1. Be incorporated into the fixed gantry structure;
2. Have the traverse, raise and lower motions controlled by switches.

# All main operating features are clearly visible without dismantling.
# The longest dimension of the model does not exceed 350mm.
# Electric power does not exceed 9 volts.

jee, I wish they gave us this kinda thing to do at school! sounds like a fund project. What materials have you got available to make it with? 350mm.. that's quite small, does it have to be fully functional?

Location
parma heights, oh
use drawer slider bearings as the traverses and just mount them under the piece that is going to be the base. then just use a motor with a pulley and string as a winch
