Building a go kart using a pedal kart frame

As the title states I am building a go kart using an older pedal kart frame. As I am new to DIY go karts, I have a few questions. I will be replacing the rear axle with a "real" axle made for go karts. I was wondering if somebody could post a picture or describe the setup for a live rear axle on a go kart.

Could you post a picture of your rear axle please? That will make some things easier for us.

On the other hand, are you sure you're willing to do this? When you put an engine on a pedal gokart, the pedals will spin like turbojet engine. You don't want to get your legs in there.

There's a number of ways to overcome this problem, we'll worry about that later.

The first thing you need to consider is will the frame be strong enough to bear the strains of an engine?

As Nodroz said, post some pics of your frame & rear axle assembly

Btw, I have removed all the pedal system, that is why I need to replace the rear axle. Anyhow, I believe the frame should hold out, although it was never intended for this purpose.

Unless you put support the frame, it will not hold up. There is a reason why they were only meant for pedal-power, not engine power. You'd basically have to build a square like frame around it. The tubing used, under much torque, would not hold up for a while.

exactly the thoughts running through my head, I'll post pictures the frame and explain what I plan to do tomorrow (its getting late). Thanks for the help though.

sorry all, I'm having some problems and will not be able to post pictures. I am going out of the USA to France and will not be able to do any work or take pictures. I found this motor at ( http://www.harborfreight.com/predat...d-for-all-states-except-california-68120.html ). As this is about quarter of the price of the other engines I was looking at and 0.5 more hp, could anybody tell me a little bit more about these. Are they good quality, safe (I don't really care but just in case), ar ether any critical flaws...? Thanks

They are very popular with the Americans. A reworked clone, but they get pretty good reviews.

Not a stupid mistake. Let me explain a little more throughly-

A "clone" by definition is a near-perfect chinese-made part-for-part copy of a Honda GX series engine. Most commonly made and used is the GX200 (6.5hp). I say, "near-perfect", but please note that quality control standards, metallurgy, and manufacturing processes are substandard to the genuine Honda article. When I say, "part-for-part interchangeability", there are some exceptions, mostly cosmetic. I have seen and heard of gas tanks being different, recoil covers, etc. There are some clones that deviate further. For the most part, all the important stuff is a direct fit. Cranks, cams, pistons, valves, block, head, carbs, etc.

Where the Predator strays from the "clone" definition is in it's displacement. The 212cc Predator is "based" on the GX200 (196cc), but has had it's bore/stroke altered for the larger displacement and slightly higher power output (rated). Therefore, the parts interchangeability is not what it is with a true "clone".

So it is a clone, but it's not. The Predator has seen a lot of good publicity on this forum, is widely available, and can be had cheaply. If you want cheap and now (a trip to your local HF, coupon in hand, then grab one. If you'd prefer the supreme aftermarket Honda and clone parts support of a true clone, then keep shopping.
