I have only dealt with live axles and now I am building a kart for my kids. I don't want to use a live axle because the steering is more difficult. But I don't know how to incorporate brakes without the axle. I don't want to use steel pressing against the tire? What do I need?

At the most basic level, you need a band brake. You would mount a brake drum on your drive hub, and the band would act upon that.
