I Live in alaska and got this motor from a friend... was left out for years well after some research I found its a Briggs an stratton from the 50s model 23a. Type:703035 and serial #751614. The specs I could find said it has 15.75# torque@ 2400rpm, Bore 3", and stroked to 3 1/4.. can run 9 hp @3600rpm .. now I have no idea of what it came off of or even what it would best placed in. So here's pic love to hear what ya'll think....thanks,

I have a similar on, a #14. There is something to be said of these old Briggs engines... They are basic as they get... Cast iron bore with a plain bushing side bearing..
Carbs can be a bit finicky, but overall they're bullet proof. For the most part I think you still can get parts for these guys..
Certain parts can be converted to use modern parts... Ignition and carbs can be changed.

These are the original industrial engine.. They were for almost everything you can think of... A bit earlier than this they were used on a clothes washing machine...

Can you post a few other pics of the motor close up...

Will upload more. Dang limited data! Thanks for the info an tracking it down. So I was thinking a go kart because this thing is 3 times the size of most. An that's 3x the weight. Needs many parts like fuel filter, gas tank, air filter etc.. from what I can tell so far.... any input is more then appreciated.

Well there is few things needed for sure.. Unless you want to for sure get this running and have cash to spend on parts.... If it were me.... I'd put this motor as a back burner project... Don't scrap or toss it...
Work on it over the winter or so... Get a pred or other clone and start building the bike or kart...
Off hand it'll be expensive as the clutches are for 1" shaft.

Love the coffee cup for the size comparison--sheesh.

Looks like a fantabulous engine. I love 'em all and I think once you get to know the Briggs, they become sort of enchanting; beckoning you from all corners.

It appears it bears the same type of updraft carburetor that Kelly Wood was raving about recently...

I agree....^^^
If anything I bet I could put the carb off of my buddies model A and it would work... They Look almost the same...

I forgot...Upon my previous search... Some of the older lawn tractors running these motors, ran an external 12v coil and condenser, just like a car, with the same setup... They also used a starter/generator to charge the battery..
If your points are salvageable(they are contained in the little box on the side with the button), and getting a new ignition coil is difficult, this can be the trigger for the 12v coil conversion.

This one I'll haul with a small hernia to my shop to be broke down cleaned an rebuilt during my long winter.. I hope either I can find the parts or just clean it best an do w h at I can. Then either set it up to look cool, or maybe see if anyone needs one for parts..

You didn't mention it but does it turn over at all or is it seized? Either way is no biggie but if the crankshaft turns you may be able to tell what kind of compression she has just by feel and before tools get involved.

We won't know anything until you get it dismantled.

That yellow paint is certainly distinctive; it's almost a Caterpillar yellow...

Oh yea it turns over fine...which I was shocked at. But I quickly remembered much like my 68 chevy. These things are simple and solid... The best combo in my opinion.
