Broken spindle

Two 9 year olds broke a spindle on our Kenbar Sk 959. My son was driving and took a turn hard on gas and the spindle axle broke. While checking the damage it looks like the bearing failed which I believe lead to the axle failure. The axle sheared so cleanly it looked as if it were cut. The red kart is not the one with the broken axle.

Grind the rest of it off and weld in a new bolt......
It's really that easy.....

I'm glad I posted this, thx for the tip. What kind of bit should I use to get that broken piece out of the housing?

Wheel/hub side looks like it should fall out once you take off the cap n nut on the other side. Knuckle side looks like you can grind off smoothly and weld on another bolt (as FMJ said)..

I've had this happen and welded a new grade 5 bolt.
Is it better to use a grade 8?

Use grade 8 hardware, ALWAYS....... Highest sheer strength.....

That side should slide out the side where the nut is. There is nothing holding it in there but maybe the nut.......

Now, hang on a sec, yes, grade 8 have a higher tensile strength but, as a result, are harder to weld; have you ever had problems with that?

Never welded anything before but I like a challenge.

In that case, can I suggest you have someone else do it for you; do you really want to, potentially, risk your sons life on the strength (literally) of you first weld?

It's not worth the risk if you can't get it hot enough to get a deep bite...... The last thing you want is that to fall off while he is hitting a hard right turn...... (or left)

Or you can always buy a new spindle setup and not have to weld or worry about it..

Fabroman you are correct. No need to attempt that. Axx3d, I did buy two new spindles. I hope they are here for the weekend. Thanks for all of your tips.
