my briggs and stratten 20 hp has a electric start6. last week it started clicking when I tried to start it. click, click then iyt started. is the starter going out?

loose/corroded battery cable

Try tapping the starter LIGHTLY around the brush area a piece of wood or hammer handle. Sometimes the brushes stick in the housing and don't make contact with the armature, thus not starting.
Also check all wire connections.

Try to listen closely to find the source of the "click". Sounds like it's probably the solenoid (likely under the dashboard). To isolate the problem, locate the 2 big screw terminals on the solenoid. Now- carefully touch BOTH terminals with the shaft of a screwdriver. If starter cranks no problem, then your solenoid is bad. If starter won't crank, it's the starter.

also asuming its 12v try jumping it with a car battery

your battery may be going out

id put money on dirty terminals on the battery which will result in a flat battery and a hard start

for a list of easiest/ less likely to go wrong
jump start it
clean battery terminals
clean all other terminals
tap starter
jump across soliniod
