(edit, made a mistake in the poll, 5hp briggs from the 70's)
hi guys, im looking for opinions and facts, say you have the governor removed from a honda gx200 clone (harbor freight) , and a old briggs flathead 5 hp, both have headers, and normal air cleaners, which engine makes more power, is a better engine. and can be upgraded more?

Most likely, the Briggs can be upgraded more. It's parts are probably higher quality.

The briggs should be able to put out, and handle more power than a clone simply because of the fact that it was built to last. Clones are more modern, but they just aren't made like the older briggs. Plus like redsox said there is a bigger market for parts, and the parts you buy are more likely to be of higher quality.

i notice that, ive ran my honda clone full throttle without a governor, but everything else stock,, maybe 5 seconds most, it scared me, ill never do that again, ive run my briggs full throttle, and never thought oh this is going to blow up, i love to run my briggs full throttle, and half the pipes and all i see, i payed 40 bucks for maybe 4 inch pipe with a curve in it and a muffler, but baught a straight pipe for my briggs for 10 bucks that looks like it was made out of somthing

I really was not gonna comment on this but I feel I should.
Fact. I love briggs old 70's 80"s stuff dont get me wrong.
They have theyre own place in history.
And that is where they belong in MHO.
Just last summer we were doing our "parking lot" racing
and was running both briggs flat top head and HF blue clones.
We did not make it through the season with the briggs.
Was going at moderate speed probably no more than 3600 RPM
when poof! Blew a hole in the side of the block.. ( have photos somewhere)
Long of the short, we took the blue clones home that day, the briggs did not make it.
This is one reason why I went with the Yellow Clone. With a yellow clone from NR racing
(same as my build thread) it will pull 6300 with a HF muffler...
They are rated at 8+ horsepower. None of my buddies could catch me.
I weight 275 pounds they weight around 220 or less.
The only one that could hang was my buddy that had the 5.5 Intek briggs...
He could hang, but never pass me on straight aways...His briggs was ALL stock
and even had the stock breather and muffler, and still had the governor.
Yup..The INTEK was the only thing to come even remotely close.
This year, my bud upgraded to a 8.5 INTEK. (he loves briggs what can i say?)
but I got him scared again....why? The briggs weighs more naturally and it takes longer to build up horse power. We shall see....
And oh... I wont be going back to the old briggs flat heads...but you can see why.
Now that purple raptor I sold Cyborg?...hehehehe.
He got a good motor!

my briggs is alot lighter than my clone, and me only weighing 85 pounds make them fly, but this motor even as my neighbor said who raced dirt oval track for 2 years and has raced many raptors and briggs. he said my motor had the potentional to be a race motor as it was, we took the engine even at not running right and tuned the high end just to hear it, and the engine sounded mean with the stock to me, muffler, ive got a straight pipe on the way and i cant wait to get this all together, i love briggs, briggs was made tough, i mean anything 80's and back, i have a newer briggs lawnmower just for cutting the grass and as much as i sort of like i, i hate it, its easy to start and runs good, but i just dont like the setup and how its made, i like my briggs, it has some power behind that, seems like clones are modern peices of ****, briggs were made tough, and are all good when taken care of, and tecumsehs give good power but have lots of carb trouble, i basically like my briggs better, but it has a few problems right now

Let me rebuild this raptor to it's former glory, and I'll show you some raw power and speed, you'll throw rocks at that yeller clone :)
Maybe we'll get together and make a video of us racing them.

Welcome to the forums! I suggest that you make your own thread in the correct section of the forums asking your question (and maybe including more detail) so we can better help you/answer your question faster, and have more people contribute.

There absolutely nothing wrong with Subaru, I have a souped up EH41 13.5 hp on my dirt kart, for an OHV engine they are extremely well built, smooth running as h3ll, little to no vibration, and will take a beating like nobodies business.

I had it bored .20 over, custom modded cam, shaved and ported, 36mm intake, 31mm exhaust valves, roller rockers for gx390, 34mm mikuni flat slide carb , and one of those make your own exhaust kits for gx390 that NR racing has, of course no governor.

Considering how heavy the kart is + my 185lb, I've had it up to 62mph at a local puddle jumper air strip near my house, let me tell you on a dirt kart running speeds like that, it's a white knuckle ride, but I didn't build it really for speed, but more for raw power and torque for riding in various terrines, I also use it for hunting combined with a home made deer hauler trailer. instead of a 4 wheeler just to be different, and can go just about anywhere my buddies can. I've even use it for hog hunting to out run and herd the hogs where ever we want them.

Why is this? Because we all know they aren't built with pride and integrity like an older Briggs was. They weren't built with care and precision. We know they're cheap. Practically disposable.

I say Subaru 7 Horse.

Good engine, but a tiny market for after market parts. Unless you get them custom made, then you pay top dollar. Whereas a 5HP Briggs flathead is very simple, just as reliable, and has parts out the wazoo.

You'd be suppressed at how much of the gx series performance parts that will work on them.

Jee I never want to have a flywheel explode or a block blown that's why I'm so scared to remove the gov. I believe Briggs are better simply because they are made better. The quality of material they use is better and thicker.

You'll get valve float long before that'll happen.
that flywheel will hold up just fine on a mildly modded clone at 7k rpm unless it's been damaged already.

dont upgrade your springs, it keeps it from floating valves and that makes no obvious signs and then boom, your block is gone
