When I decided to use this motor, I knew it needed a rebuild. Since the motor was going to be completely torn down, that is where the motor needs to be if you are going to lay out your motor like this.
After the motor is disassembled, the parts need to be degreased and thoroughly cleaned. I washed and soaked the engine block in a parts washer, then in a wash tub with hot water and Dawn dish washing detergent.
The metal shrouds were sent to a local metal cleaning shop. The parts were soaked in a heated caustic solution which removed all of the paint and rust from the parts, leaving perfectly clean, fresh metal to work with.
The next step is polishing. I own a metal finishing shop, so all of the metal polishing work was done in-house. All of the parts were polished smooth, then buffed to a mirror finish.
The engine case remains bare polished metal, but the shrouds were chrome plated...
Before you can put the motor back together, the block needs to be cleaned again, ensuring that all of the metal dust and polishing compounds are out of the motor. After washing, the polished and plated surfaces were masked to protect the finished parts from scratches and handling marks during engine reassembly.
One note - I saved myself a boatload of headaches by purchasing a new OEM steel gas tank versus caustic cleaning and heavy polishing of the original - the new tanks only required minor polishing prior to plating.
The next step is to reassemble the motor, and remove the protective masking...
