to those that dont know most verticle shaft motors have aluminum flywheels, which means lighter than cast iron.

I know it has been discussed before but searching hasn't put it to rest for me. Instead of bumping an old thread I am starting one. I know newrider has said no way no how. and Russ says no prob, I figure both will chime in with more info.

I have some facts and questions.

Facts. feel free to corect me on these
1. I have a few for free
2. from my knowledge of metal (which is not much) aluminum is softer and thus less britle and less likely to explode vs. cast iron
3. people say you can take a cast iron flywheel to 7000 rpm
4. a vert shaft will run with out a mower blade
5. I know a billet would be stronger but also more expensive.

questions
1. do it yes or no
2. what is the safe RPM range

thanks
Jesse

3. people say you can take a cast iron flywheel to 7000 rpmBullpoo. There no proof that it happens and people have tested them to 10'000+ RPM
4. a vert shaft will run with out a mower bladeYep
5. I know a billet would be stronger but also more expensive.

questions
1. do it yes or no Go for it!
2. what is the safe RPM range 10'000+

You might have problems fitting it, apparently some fit, other don't. The flywheel may also be set up for different ignition timing.

Good luck.

Yeah fitment is always a concern doing that stuff, and the aluminum brittleness I guess I should have said "should"

I also realize these won't be as strong as a billet fly wheel. I have seen pics of a cast iron fly wheel letting go but that was a clone

I ran an Open Briggs 5hp motor and used to turn it 10,500 rpm with the stock flywheel, only modification to it was to have the engine balanced.
