briggs help

i got a gokart from a friend for 70 bucks and everything seems to be ok but the engine doesn't want to start. it has spark and sometimes it will start rev up and then die. if i keep trying to get it to start, gas starts leaking out of the bottom of the carb

anyone know what might be wrong?

never having worked on one like that, i would have to say she is flooding. pull the carb, clean it and check the float setting if it has a float.

i had it off yesterday and everyting looked really clean

does the engine have enough compression? being an updraft carb, if the engine does not have enough suction to draw the fuel all the way into the chamber it can pull part way up and fall back. i really couldn't speculate further.

i assume it has enough how would i test for that?

Could be a screwy throttle linkage. Are you running a governor? If so try unhooking the carb from the gov and wire the carb in the idle position.

What are the mixture screws set at? Try 1 3/4 turns for both the main and idle, that should get it going.

yeah its still hooked up to the govener so i'll try unhooking it and see if that helps

also what is this? i'm pretty sure its a briggs 10 horse but im not sure

Need numbers from fan shroud, probably an 8.

yeah down in flames, did you put alot of oil in, cause that might be it?

to much oil would make it cut out? i don't understand

the crank dips into the oil as it spins. If theres too much oil, it will cause too much resistance.

If it doesn't have a dip stick you just fill it to overflowing with the engine level.
