Briggs Crankshaft Go Bad?

Hello everyone i have a briggs&stratton 5hp flathead and it seized due to the lack of oil, and the cylinder walls are fine, i suspect its the main bearings that went bad. what is the possibility the area were the bearings went bad that the crankshaft got eaten away?

only way to find out is to take it apart and check. Is it a bearing or bushing engine? if its a bushing engine the block will most likely be in trouble, if its bearing it could go either way.

its a bearing engine, if so were could i find a new crankshaft for a 130202 model briggs?

you wont need a new crank there hardend steel cranks what part of the engine siezed?

the piston was seized up, but i took the head off and tapped it back down with a peice of wood, so do u think the bearings just went bad?

Ok dude there is the two ones supporting the crank and the one on the crank and rod. are you talking about that one? if so to know for sure you have to remove the side cover and the flywheel remove the cam and undo the rod bolts and pull the end cap of and push the piston out of the top of the cylinder and inspect the bearings the crank is probaly good if its a cast alum rod. ive seen engines that people seized up and has aluminum stuck in the crank so you just scrape that off.

Also is the piston could have got stuck in the cylinder so i would put marvel mystery oil on the top of the piston.

Oh ic, idk if the crankshaft is aluminum? Would the 130202 model be aluminum?

also the piston isn't stuck anymore. i tapped it down with a peice of wood.

the cranks gona be steel no doubt about that... but the rods im sure are cast aluminum

mostlikely the bearings good but i would take the engine appart and hone the bore with scottch brite pad. Does the engine happen to be a I/C? take a magnet to the bore of the thing and see if it sticks...

Also you might need new rings...

No it has a aluminum bore and steel rings and cast iron piston on a aluminum bore= horible engine.

Cast iron piston? you mean cast aluminum.

The I/C engines are better, they DO have a steel cylinder liner, with a cast aluminum piston and steel rings, pretty good engines.

If you could tap the piston down then its most likely not the crank bearings, and it was just the piston itself.

Most of these briggs engines do not have lower end rod bearings, its just a bushing basically. If thats what seized up then you will need a new rod, but most likely not a new crank.

yeah im getting everything confused this past month or so.... so yeah cast what ever the hell it is.... i thought the ic were the ones with the alum bore?

And that bushing technicaly is a bearing most engines are this way..

the IC ones are industrial strength. crank should be good. if the lower rod bearing is toast, use some emory cloth to take the aluminum shavings off the crank and it'll be good

You probably just soft seized(seizure with little damage) the piston, oil it up and go.

he pmed me about something saying theres a light scratch in the cylinder is that any concern? if its not to big i dont see it being any concern to anything...

and i was thinking about a "cool bore"

IC has the dual bearings and the steel sleeve. Everything else has an aluminum bore and either a single bearing on the PTO side or dual bushings...

If you're desparate, order some Manley 40180 epoxy. Military grade, rated at 1350F. Twice that of JB weld and a bit more.
