My son recently dug out an old BS engine from the shed, hasn't been fired up in 20 years. And to my amazement, it turned and will fire up with some starter fluid or a splash of fuel into the carb. However, due to either gummed up tank, lines, or carb -- it won't fire more than 10 seconds at a time. I'm just grateful it wasn't locked up. It looks rough, the tank is rusted beyond belief. If it can dry rot on the motor, it's dry rotted. If it can rust, it's rusted. If it can cause tetanus, it'll cause tetanus. Lol.
So, a few quick points if like to make before I ask a few questions:
I'm not buying another motor. If there's no rebuild kits that I can throw together online, then this engine will be recycled. I posted on another site and people decided they'd tell me "what I should do".. which always includes stuff like, "throw it away and get a better motor."
I fully realize what this motor is, and what it isn't in terms of value and performance. (which is -- not much).
But the kid is excited to rebuild it and use it as I did as a kid. This engine was on my first gokart I ever owned back in the late 80s. My dad got it for me, it was made in 1985, June 12th. So it's got sentimental value to me.
What I'd like to know is this:
As I search for parts for it, what am I looking for? Is this a series of engines that have somewhat interchangeable parts? Say, a small block Chevy for instance. If I'm looking for an intake, they pretty much all fit if they are SBC's. Cams, and heads too. So what is the type of BS engine I have? Is this the flathead 5hp type? Does any of this make sense?
I'm looking for rings, bearings, carbs, heads... Even better rod and crank if they are made. And while I'm by no means "rich"... Money really isn't an issue. I'll spend whatever it takes, within reason, to get this thing back in top shape, and will do it either completely stock, or with a mild performance boost (obviously this engine isn't meant to be a performer. I'm realistic about it's potential. If I can make it even a 4.5hp, that's a 12.5% boost. Higher compression has been one of my go to mods throughout the years. I'm unsure if I can mill the head on this and still maintain its integrity. I own a porting business, and have been porting intake and exhaust components for 20 years. I can already see a few areas of improvement that can be made with this set up. I'm dying to find a cam that has just a couple of more degrees duration, perhaps a tiny amount of higher lift too. Anyways...
Basically the only issue I have is knowing what works with this engine, and what doesn't. And more importantly, where to find it at!
Any help along these lines would be very much appreciated.
As I write this, I'm looking out in the field beside my house and I can still see the remnants of the dirt track I made 30 years ago. The nostalgia makes me emotional. And watching my son go around that same course in a few weeks will be worth whatever I need to do to make it happen.
God bless y'all.
