My friend has a 3.5hp briggs and straton gokart and i brought it home to try and fix it and after looking at it for an hour it looked like it wasn't getting any gas to the carb so i gave up and then an hour later i thought what if i put gas straight into the carb and it started but does anyone know why it wouldn't be getting gas into the carb and how i could fix it?

Probably just the diaphragm, they're a couple bucks at a good hardware store.

Also check for a fuel filter. Easiest way to clean a tak is to remove it, slosh some gas around, then dump. Repeat
Take the carb off of the gas tank and blow through all passages with pressurized air and carb cleaner. Scrub everything with a wire brush to make it look new. Take the little screws off the side of the carb by the muffler and replace that rubber diaphragm and the spring also get a new base gasket that sandwiches between the carb and tank. Take your model number with you to the mower shop off of the pull cord shroud.
If you think you cleaned it just good enough... its not good enough and you'll be doing it again. Make sure you use stabil in these motors especially since they are such a pain to fix when the gas goes stale.

If it's just silt & dirt, just swish some gas around in it & drain it again.
