Hello! First post. Sorry for the many questions. I recently found an old briggs motor (3HP, flat top?) that someone had thrown away, and amazingly enough it runs. But it's completely missing the air filter, along with a muffler. I just bought a straight pipe for now.

I'm new to small motors, but just as a car, using crome tubing for an "intake" wouldn't it give it that deep sound? Or is it not pulling enough air.

I wanted a small elbow crome tube coming from the engine, to the air filter. I have a "performance" air filter I took off a 2 cycle motor on a pocket rocket, that I was going to use as a replacement. Would doing this cause any stress on the engine? Should I just buy a directly replacement?

Moving on the the oil change, what's a good way to completely change out all the oil? Should I literally just dump/turn the motor till it's empty?

Then last, the clutch. I was going to buy a clutch and put it on a small frame I have laying around for the kids. What kind of clutch (i don't want to use a torque converter, as i'm on a budget) should I get? I have a big backyard with all flat grass, so I would like more torque then speed, or any other things I can do to get the most out of the motor.

Thanks!

On my old b&g 3hp engine, the oil drain is on the middle of one side at the bottom. It is a square shaped plug from memory. Undo this and drain oil into a suitable container below - no need to tip it upside down. I changed the oil when I first bought it and the oil was jet black and thick! I then flushed it with some oil and then ran it for a short time before draining that oil and replacing with some new oil. Removing the filler plug too helps the oil to drain out faster.

If you are on a budget a maxtorque or hillard centrifugal clutch should set you back about $30, and should do the job.
Is the engine shaft 5/8" or 3/4" keyed?
If 5/8 there is someone in the for sale/trade secton selling a 5/8 clutch for $30.

How do I measure the shaft? I just took the clutch off, which was very wobbly (it had multiple washers in front, which doesn't seem safe)

vernier or a ruler or estimate. Theres only a couple of options so you dont have to measure it that accuratly to find out the diameter

if you want to get the most out of your engine you can get a (20 series?) torque converter.

pocket bike air filter should be just fine. is it mesh wire and/or creased paper? or the foam type?

if its the foam kind you can wash it with soap and water and oil it with some motor oil, thats what i do to mine once in a while to keep it clean.

It's the meshed wiring. It seems it may cut off to much airflow, as the engine struggles when idling when the filter is attached, removing it, it runs fine. Should I just stick with the stock B&S airfilter replacement? Or is there something I can do to get alittle more air flowing in this thing.

What size teeth on the clutch / wheel should I use? For right in the middle of torque/top speed? The wheel sizes in the rear are 6" and the front being 4".
