Briggs 5hp throttle woes

Hi:

I’ve been looking at the various diagrams online but cannot figure out why my throttle has no control over the carburetor butterfly??? I purchased a new governor spring but no matter how much throttle pressure I place, the carb butterfly does not move. I can get throttle response only by moving the gold piece by hand. The throttle arm pushes that threaded rod with the nut on the end to the left. I’m sure this is a newb question. Thanks for the help.

I cannot tell the position the throttle is in the picture, but by your description, would have to agree something's not right.

Could be as simple as the linkage on the gold butterfly flipper may be in the wrong hole (180* out)

Make sure the throttle is closed all the way and follow the linkage pieces and arms back to your throttle cable. Disconnect the throttle cable and make sure you can move the linkage by hand and get the expected result (note the direction to open and close the butterfly). when the pedal is pushed the cable will pull the linkages the right way to open the butterfly.

Since you have a governed arm, the governor should be able to lessen the full throttle command (or cable motion).

Here's a few things to check...
Isn't the throttle stop spring supposed to be touching something when the throttle blade is closed ? Could one of the linkage pieces be on backwards ?

I would get everything in the correct place for throttle closed at idle. The stop should be engaged against something, and the linkages should move easy (the other way) to open up the butterfly, and the cable to the pedal should have a corresponding pull action.

Is there a throttle return spring to pull the foot pedal back after pressing it in ?

Thanks. Yes, the throttle cable has a return spring on it that pushes the pedal back forward when released. I am completely unfamiliar with how these engines work. However, I don’t understand how the one long but thin rod that runs down the the governor is supposed to open and close the butterfly up top. I feel like I am missing a linkage or a spring somewhere. The only two springs I have are the governor spring and the throttle cable return spring.

i think we need more pick of the governor. also you throttle is wide open. when you start the engine start on a block.

Thank you. Adjusted throttle cable itself and now I have movement at the butterfly. Now to adjust the clutch! Thanks again.
