i have a briggs 5hp that isnt running great so im gonna strip it down and check it up and clean it. just wondering will something like diesel be suitable to dip the block in to clean it up? also what budget mods can i do? i have a welder and steel for exhausts but what after that? nothing expensive
thanks

you may be able to find a aftermarket connecting rod to increase hp. you could bore it. and brake cleaner or parts cleaner is usually the way to go.

where could i get a cheap one? is it safe to remove the governer on a standard engine or do i need valve springs etc. im in ireland so parts are hard enough to come by and delivery costs an arm and a leg. im happy to rip an engine but im a bit of a noob when it comes to karts..

is there any way of limiting the revs so as not to blow flywheel or con rod (without my right foot:thumbsup:)
also what gains are there in a striaght exhaust and ram air induction kit? can i just screw a 20mm pipe into the exhaust port?

Yeah just screw the pipe in, about 18" i think would be right.
Have you got a flat head or ohv briggs?
If its a flat head it will limit itself with the valve float. If Ohv, apparetly the valves can bend if allowed to float. However i have removed the governor on my ohv clone, no problems yet.

Why not? It would probly do a little bit, but you may have to re-jet or turn the needle on the carb out to allow more fuel after that. Yeah, I think all that aftermarket stuff for bypassing a governer is just a scam to get you to pay $125 for a billet flywheel. Don't worry about it, especially on a flathead briggs I know sooooooo many guys who have ran flatheads (without governers) for years! and they still run! Not once one blew up (these guys had more than 5 go-karts/mini-bikes).

i can see a billet rod, but i dont think youll need a billet flywheel unless you plan to pass 10,000 RPM.

removing the governor doesnt make you gain HP. nor does a billet rod.

....................

governor removal: doesnt increase HP, only increases engine speed.

billet rod: upgraded connecting rod, stronger than stock, takes more abuse. does nothing to performance.
