Hey guys, just baught an old Briggs 5hp motor for my kart. It will start up for about 2 seconds on starting fluid then dies. Has great compression and spark. Any suggestions?

Have you taken off the carb and cleaned it. Often the jets get clogged and fuel doesn't reach the motor.

Fuel problem. Check all Fuel lines (if it isn't one of the weird carb in the fuel tank)
Put fresh gas in and try again. Clean carburettor, and possibly get a new diaphram.

Give the carb a good cleaning with carb cleaner.
If it’s the carb on tank style, check all your gaskets and also you have a small pipe that goes from the carb to the head of the engine, make sure the rubber isn’t cracked. Replace the gaskets if you find any tears. Once you verify that you are getting gas to the carb, check that you are getting good vacuum. Place the palm of your hand over the mouth of the carb and you should feel the vacuum pressure. The engine needs to be running in order to test this. If not, you have a vacuum leak. If all checks out and you can get it up and running but it sounds funny or doesn’t continue to run when you give it gas then replace the diaphragm on the side of the carb (4 screws to open the cover but be careful of the little spring that sits behind the cover and diaphragm).
