Good evening all ,
I have a briggs 5hp engine sitting in the garage, My father acquired it brand new from someone years ago but there is no real info on it , My father has since died and the internet is not telling me much, It has either a 7/8" or 1" shaft, Model # 130212 Type 3218 01 Code 90080907. Can any of the experts here enlighten me about this engine??

^^^ Awesome info sir , Thank You . Is this engine able to accept the upgrades that the standard 5hp briggs flat head will take? will finding a clutch or torque converter be more difficult cause of the increased shaft diameter?

You are welcome, and yes It seems like your engine will accept most of the normal 5hp upgrades. As far as a torque converter if it has a 3/4'' or 1'' shaft you should be fine. Not much out there for the 7/8'' shaft though. Got any pics of the PTO shaft ?

One of the most common engines for our purposes, I'm frankly surprised you had any issues whatsoever finding information for it.
I assign you 50 demerits for your incompetence.

Jussst kidding...sheesh.

I think Hellion is in dire need of something. He appears a little hard on this crowd this morning.

So here are the pics that were requested, The shaft is 1.090 inches . As for the info on the internet that eluded me , when I searched , all I would get was for sale links for engines that were similar but not the same to what I have . Dont mind the dust , it's been sitting on a shelf in the garage for 15 years lol......

What a honker of a shaft! Those particular engines are sometimes allocated for snowblower use I think.

Good photos. Good motor. Those 4 threaded holes surrounding the shaft are ideal for mounting up a Torq-A-Verter...

Yeah I'm glad I remembered it , I was going to go buy a predator , Now I can put that money into making this one a little bit more peppy :) Need a little advice on rods, I read a raptor 3 rod will fit into the engine and that it would handle 7k rpm reliably , I can also get one for cheap when comparing it to a new arc billet rod.

What would you guys choose? Also are the pistons up to par in these engines? I see alot of people doing the rods/springs/cams etc but I dont really see alot of threads about needing to redo pistons. Basically I'm going to turn it into a little beast of an engine but small engines like this are pretty new to me, Up till this point it's been sleds and cars and bikes ,

I really like the cheap prices on all the performance parts , A whole lot cheaper then my Mitsubishi's lol

Your piston will be just fine, as far as the rod the if your going with a bigger cam and valve springs I would go with the ARC billet rod.

I pulled then engine down last night, The bore is scored . It's also not a sleeved bore either, I'm going to hone it till it smooths out a bit and see what happens. Not to happy about the findings though :(

Yea.. Its a cool bore block which is just the aluminum bore , be careful the more you hone it the bigger the cylinder gets.

I have that exact same engine. I think they were made to run stationary equipment because it has high and low idle (at least mine does) and it's the first 5hp I had seen with a 1" shaft....ironically you've got one too. I bought a knockoff Comet 30 series TQ from eBay. Just make sure it accepts the 1" shaft and not the 3/4"

Just how scored is it?

Aren't all engine cylinders scored after a time? I mean let's be realistic. I bet all other things considered, the engine is fine and has good compression in the cylinder...

There's a myth circulating that all the racing flatheads use the I/C block, more or less, with the iron cylinder sleeve and dual ball bearings on the crank, but a lot run the Kool Bore engines either with plain bearings on one or both ends of the crank.

The only real concern with the Kool Bores is a factually unsubstantiated need to be on top of the oil changes more often than one normally would.

It's not bad enough to scrap the block. As for the cool bore. I just assumed it would be iron cause of the one inch shaft. The scratches in the cylinder are top to bottom not sideways so I'm not super concerned about it but it is an unknown seen issue. Anybody here have any used performance parts for one they want to sell me ??

Hey PP231, read up on a pertinent thread by LeeMajors. He did just about everything you are wanting to do here... he had a mishap at or near the end of that thread...wonder where he's been lately?
