Is it best to break in an engine stock and then modify it or make modifications then break it in?

There is no "best," only "it depends on what you're going to do with it."

The rings and bore are effectively the only parts that have to wear together in these engines. If the piston isn't coming back out, then you could seat the rings whenever. There again, why have it apart twice? Just put it together the way you want it and run it then.

Thanks for the response. That's what I figured but just thought I'd ask anyways. Better to ask than do something incorrectly.

There are a lot of ways to do it depending on how the engine is built, but it's almost universally better to apply at least mild to moderate alternating load/no load conditions to help seat the rings. Some more specialty rings have facing materials that require a hard break-in.

Think about consumer generators that go straight to 3600rpm on the first start.

Brand new, break down, clean and assemble new parts and break in.

no need to break in twice.

Plus if you go ahead and tear it apart before you start it you can reuses the sidecover gasket and you can make sure your engine is cleaner then any of NASA’s space probes are when they are put together. In other words I believe you can take your time and make sure if nothing else that the only thing inside your engine and on your parts is some AmsOil break in oil If you can’t do better then large Chinese factory then go ahead and smack your head off of a brick wall then sit down and watch how someone like Paul @Paulskarts does it take notes and research anything you are not sure of and also pay attention to Denny that man knows the correct way to build an engine and always ask if you are not sure believe me not asking can cost a lot of money and time The more knowledge you apply to any project the better the outcome will be set the correct habits while messing with stock type stuff (be anole about tollerences and cleanliness) and you will be well on your way to build a stage 7 or so motor. In other words instead of stages I decide on a HP and FT/LBS of tourqe I want to make then I go from there. In order not to make my wife slap the snot out off me it has taken me a year and a half to build my big block and now that my son loves his mini bike I yanked the 196 and built him a tillitson hemi that is teaching him what I call fast
