Brat Subaru

My friend has a brat Subaru go kart he would like to sell. Needs frame welded a chain and clutch. Has new engine

That's a side-mounted engine, correct? How does that air-cooled engine get enough air in there to run decently? Through the painted-on louvers on the hood?
P.S. : What made the Brat stand out was the pair of rear-facing seats in the truck bed. A girlfriend and a friend of hers both got nauseous from the backwards Tallahassee boonie-crashing. They said nobody threw up, but girlfriend's breath said otherwise. I wonder why the mfr. chose the Brat without the rear seats for the body design.
